Nearly 10 explosive devices (UXO) were destroyed in Siem Reap on Tuesday after being discovered in Svay Leu district, according to a police report. The UXO were discovered in a rice field by farmers during plowing as well as in water reservoirs by military engineering officials investigating water levels after the Kingdom’s drought earlier this year.

“We have found about eight to nine old mines, bombs and shells from the war days after digging in canals and ponds, and then we blew them up in the forest in Svay Leu’s Kantout village,” district deputy police chief Hout Sokry said. “We received some of them from people plowing a rice field and some from ponds dug by engineering officials under Kheng Sameth,” he added, referring to the commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces engineering unit. He said among the UXO were landmines, artillery shells and bombs.

The nearly 10 UXO add to the more than 30 found earlier this month in the province’s Chikreng district.
