visa exemption limits

Featured Replies

I'm an American citizen. I entered Thailand in December 2015, extended my visa exemption at immigration once, and received another exemption at the Burmese border, so I'm sure I've reached my 90-day limit on exemptions for the year.

However, since then, I have gotten a new passport (with new passport number) that only contains one tourist visa, no exemptions or extensions.

I am traveling out of the country soon. Does anyone know if my new passport means I will be able to get the 30-day exemption upon return? It will be difficult to get a tourist visa while out of country as I will not be in a city with a Thai embassy.

First, there is no official 90-day limit (or any other hard limit) of visa exempt entries. It is up to immigration on entry to decide if you are a bona fide tourist. With many visa exempt entries (especially back-to-back) the immigration official will be prompted by their system to scrutinize your entry more closely than usual. You may be referred to a supervisor.

A new passport does not prevent immigration from seeing your previous entries to Thailand. The new and old passports are linked in their system (assuming the system is working as designed).

There is no 90 day limit on visa exempt entries. A 30 day extension does not count as a visa exempt entry.

Getting a new passport will not erase you previous entry history in immigration's data based. Your history from the old passport was linked to your new one the first time you entered the country with it.

You will have no problem getting another visa exempt entry.

  • The only 90 day rule that exists is only enforced at a few Cambodian borders.

Extensions of stay do not count as visa exempt entries.

You should be able to get another visa exempt entry as you've broken the cycle and last entered with a tourist visa.

Anyone can be denied entry if considered a 'visa runner'. That's doing back to back visa exempt entries. There's no set number and denial is at the discretion of the IO.
