New Democracy Movement members held after distributing leaflets

BANGKOK: -- About 15 members of the so-called New Democracy Movement were temporarily detained by security officials after they were caught distributing leaflets urging people not to vote for the draft constitution in the August 7 referendum.

Led by Mr Rangsiman Rome, the political activists who include men and women arrived at Bangphli market in Bang Sao Thong district of Samut Prakan to distribute leaflets containing information about referendum which they lifted from the website of the Election Commission.

They were initially stopped by a group of police, military and local officials who asked to examine their leaflets. Having satisfied with the content in the leaflets, the activists were allowed to distribute the documents with the officials kept watching nearby.

About half an hour afterward, the officials said that some of the activists pulled out their hidden pamphlets with a message for people to vote against the draft charter and started distributing them together with the EC leaflets to people in the market.

The officials immediately stepped in to stop the distribution and took Rangsiman and the other activists to Bang Sao Thong police station for “attitude adjustment.”

It would be interesting to know what was on the offending leaflets; did they simply recommend that people vote against the constitution, or did they give reasons to vote no?

Being a fan of free speech I think either is acceptable, but being a fan of informed decisions I think a recommendation with reasons is better.

1. Kill the draft Constitution, or allege it was fraudulent if it passes. The latter would be readily believed and accepted given the extent to which P & P have pissed off the country.

2. Create dissent and foster a mutiny in the armed forces. There won't be one, but any momentum perceived to be in that direction will result in the junta giving huge concessions or fleeing the scene. Depending upon the extent of the potential mutiny.

The dynamic duo can be relied upon to help in this by being increasingly draconian and erratic. If they impoe a charter, the game will then be almost over.

At this point, should we even refer to this farce as a referendum any more? When the Junta reports polling results of 99% to be in favour of their actions, it has to make one ask what chance this draft constitution has of losing, regardless of the voting results.

At very least armed conflicts.

The political mix , the power players, and wealth and elites.

Masses and oppression.

It's a volition of stability when continuation measures are thrust forward with gross intent on maintaining power.
