Spike in Google searches from confused Brits suggest many had no idea why they Brexited

It seems that many people in the United Kingdom were perhaps not as clued as they probably should have been regarding Britain’s milestone referendum.

Just hours after the UK voted to leave the European Union, the confusion over what Brexit may actually mean for British people started to hit home in the immediate aftermath of the official result being announced.

In what was a bitterly divided and fought campaign, both sides laid out their arguments in a bid to win voters but after the votes had been cast and the result announced, its appears many Brits had no idea what the European Union is, let alone which way they should have voted.

Google reported a sharp surge in searches related to the vote, with “What is the EU?” becoming one of the most searched for questions.

Folk these days seem generally stupid. If you don't know what you're voting for, perhaps either educate ones self or don't vote.

I'm sure it's got to do with being spoon fed technology all. The time and wandering the streets staring into bleeding iPhone es and the like, people seem to have lost their smarts.

The best thing to come out of Great Britian was Australians. :D

Its been mentioned in other threads.

Perhaps it was the money men - who were clearly taken by suprise!

Alternatively, perhaps it was those who voted 'remain' - but the story is that it was Brexit voters rolleyes.gif .

Which is why only Parliament has the power to choose.

No departure until Parliament votes to repeal the European Community Act of 1972.

The next "big search" will be "Supremacy/Sovereignty of Parliament".

At the moment we sit in the eye of the storm.

Critical separation votes such as this should require a 10% majority margin to pass lest many in the 'win' camp wake up the next day similar to the morning after being rather reckless at a heady party and realise 'oh sh|t, what have I done'....

This was a referendum 'primarily' based on fear of immigrants if we're being honest.

The 'Farage/Trumpification' pied-piper tactics appealing to the base fears of a slight majority of reactionary simpletons and ageing xenophobes wins the day (but at a tremendous cost which is yet to be fully revealed and could well be a catalyst for a domino effect weakening western societies further).

Hasten to add, ironically the real 'winner' here in a weakened, divided and fearful western civilizations is ISIS and their ilk. Congrats Farage/Trump et al.

"many Brits had no idea what the European Union is"

If that is true, I dare to say, that it also applies to 90% of the European population. Who knows what the difference between the European Council and the Council of the Ministers is? What does the Commission actually do? What powers does the Parliament have? It is easy to get an opinion on that, particularly if it is hate, but only few have an opinion based on knowledge about the EU-institutions.

I think that is a huge problem for the EU and we should really think of improving our education system in that regard.

Economic reasons?

Look at the OECD statistics 2014

From average income per capita the Uk is among the top 10 of the world, even for France, Germany and Italy.

Really wonder about this whining.
What remains is the EU stupid migration policy.
Too bad that the rejection of the weak-minded migration policy must lead across an EU exit.

It was obviously the clueless 28% that didn't even vote trying to figure out why everyone was yelling about some "EU something or other".

OK connection problems, so my exasperation at the British education system has been building for a few hours. From the 90s on I hated having apprentices because they were mostly totally lacking in commonsense. Am I truly expected to believe that people did not understand what Thursday was about? If that's the case, the should lose the right to vote. Operation dumb down has worked. The education system has produced a generation of idiots.

I don't like averages like this. You have someone like the CEO of Save the children Intl on about 234,000+ pound. It means sod sod all to those on the minimum wage, trying to make ends meet.

When the British left India, they commissioned a poll to see what Indians thought of the British exit. Some 68 percent were not even aware the British had arrived. It may be a case of similar circumstances, here. A lot of people just found out they were in the EU on the day they exited it.

This was a referendum 'primarily' based on fear of immigrants if we're being honest.

Differing Priorities
Prospective voters were asked, “Which, if any, issues will be very important to you in helping to decide which way to vote?”

The impact on Britain's economy:

Remain: 41%

Leave: 18%

The number of immigrants coming into Britain

Remain: 14%

Leave 52%

So it appears your a communist who doesnt believe in democracy and majority vote then ? Why 10%, why not 20% or 30%...you fit in well with the lot in Brussels

Sour grapes get over it....you lost in a democratic vote...the people have spoken

Aaaaaah that's right. No idea at all....

Are you calling Nigel Farage, the leader of the Brexit movement, a commie?

"ICYMI – last month he [Farage] announced that he would fight for a second referendum on Britain in Europe if the remain campaign won by a narrow margin.

Calling a small defeat for his leave camp ‘unfinished business’, he predicted a second referendum on Europe.

Back then, he told the Mirror: ‘In a 52-48 referendum this would be unfinished business by a long way. If the remain campaign win two-thirds to one-third that ends it.’

No i called the poster who made the comment about a 10% separation a commie, the link provided makes no mention of any criteria, other than to say if the the spilt was close they would call for another vote...
