PM congratulates disabled Thai man given another CRPD term

Tanakorn Sangiam

BANGKOK, 25 June 2016 (NNT) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has congratulated a disabled Thai national for being chosen to sit on the United Nation’s Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) for another term.

The premier expressed his congratulations to Montian Boontan, the Thai with eyesight disability who has been chosen to be CRPD member for another term, praising him as a model for the Thais who may pursue knowledge and skills despite physical disability.

He said the CRPD membership shows Thailand’s determination to promote the rights of the disabled while the government will continue to support the role of Montian in the committee.

The Thai government has pushed forward measures in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, such as equal access to basic human rights and freedom which involves politics, society and culture, he said.

A public referendum on a draft constitution scheduled for August 7, 2016, will feature a special voting method for the disabled and help eliminate discrimination against them.

He added that all human resources are important to the nation and all people who have received proper support will become its power, not its burden.
