BANGKOK, 1 July 2016 (NNT) - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has resolved to keep its 2016 economic growth outlook at 3.1% after tourism growth and domestic consumption indicated positive signs in May.

BoT Senior Director of the Monetary Policy Group Roong Malikamas said the Thai economy had continued to show improvement between April and May. The expansion was attributed to tourism and domestic consumption growth.

Mr. Roong further revealed that consumer spending, particularly on durable goods, also rose by 7.8% from April to May.

Meanwhile, Household and agricultural spending recorded growth as the drought situation started to subside. However, the bank is seeing a 2.5% contraction in the export sector this year, despite the BoT’s positive growth forecast.

Regarding the inflation rate, the BOT Senior Director said it will likely fall within the forecast range during the second half of the year. The average inflation rate has been estimated at around 0.6% for the year.

3.1% growth is a miserable result compared to neighbouring countries. The big question is what might it have been if not for the events of 2014?

When Thai people see more baht in their pocket, that will be the time to celebrate - should I say "Lies, damn lies ...", no, pointless.
