Six students freed but another booked and detained



BANGKOK:-- Seven defiant students arrested for distributing leaflets encouraging "no vote" on the charter referendum were released late this morning from the Bangkok Remand Prison on order of the Bangkok Military Court.

However one of the students, Mr Korakot Saengyenphan, was booked and detained for questioning on a charge he faced earlier for defying the military junta’s political gathering when a group of students assembled at a railway station to board a train to Hua Hin to investigate alleged irregularities in the construction of the Rajabhakti Park.

A hundred of friends, colleagues, relatives were in front of the prison to welcome them upon release.

They also carried with them roses to give to the freed students, and also balloons with sign saying “Vote No is Not Illegal”.

The gathering was monitored by security personnel for the sake of peace and order.

Rangsiman Rome, one of the six freed students, said one if their friends, Morality, was booked by Thonburi railway police for questioning at Thonburi police station.

He said he and other friends would call on him today.

He insisted on with the “Vote No” campaign as it was the expression of thought and the right and freedom of the people that the law allows.

He also called for the people to cast their votes on the August 7 referendum whether they will choose between democracy and military dictatorship.

He thanked prison authorities for well treatment of the students while in detention although it was inconvenient and clean enough inside, thus making some of his friends to fall sick.

Other five students freed today are Anan Lokate, Thirayuth Nakhananrum, Yutthana Dasri, Somsakul Thongsuksai and Nanthapong Panmas.

The court yesterday rejected the police’s request for extended detention of the seven students saying they needed more time to wrap the case against them.

The court said that there is no reason to further lock up the suspects.

The court said "... that there is no reason to further lock up the suspects..."

What the court simply should have said is "...that there is no reason to lock up the suspects (full stop)", no further words necessary!

Rangsiman Rome called for the people to cast their votes on the August 7th referendum whether they will choose between democracy and military dictatorship.

Is this the question on the ballot sheet?

Maybe similar to N.Korea.

So the forthcoming referendum is not a "free vote" and therefore meaningless
