EU wants Thai fishing vessels to be trimmed

Featured Replies

The last time I checked Thailand was not a member of the EU.

The EU is becoming like the UN in thinking it can be an international bully and control everything that goes on in the world. They well have a point about the excess number if fishing boats but in reality it is none of their business.

but in reality it is none of their business.

So the business profiteering of uncontrolled fishing, slave labor and human trafficking should be be left to Thais only?

Indeed. And Europe buys (iirc) 21 billion baht worth of sea produce from Thailand every year.

That makes it their business.

What some people are not realising that a large proportion of that export seafood is not just wild fish but farmed and imported fish.

Thailand has become the world's largest importer of seafood for processing. When they on-sell this it is classified as Thai export fish.

Here is some interesting information about the Thai fishery.

"Since the middle of the last decade, total seafood production in Thailand has been in decline, with major increases in aquaculture production partly mitigating significant drops in marine capture productivity. Another important new feature is that Thailand has increasingly taken to importing raw materials for its processing industry. In particular, Thailand has become the world’s top importer of fresh, chilled, and frozen tuna, with imports of 700,000–800,000 tonnes annually. This country is also one of the world’s largest exporters of shrimp, canned tuna, squid, and cuttlefish. Shrimp products and canned tuna, respectively, contribute 36 per cent and 27 per cent of the total value of Thailand’s fish exports. Thailand has established itself as a key processing country for seafood products made from both domestically sourced and imported raw materials, and for compliance with the strict HACPP standards"

Here is a link to some widely researched and very informative information about the Thai fishing industry; for those who may be genuinely interested.

And this is important? Why?

If Thailand does not toe the line it will get it's exports (or some of them) banned from the shelves of European stores.

The 'yes but..." strategy doesn't add much value I don't think.

The EU just can't help interfering can they. Next thing you know it'll be like blighty where local boats have no quotas because the eurocrats gave all rights to their beloved Spanish fleet. ASEAN really should ban the sale of seafoods to the EU, get them back there netting up the Med and see how well that works out for them.

If thais weren't mentally challenged, the EU would not have to do these things. I think the EU should do way more.

23 trawlers per every square km of Thai territorial waters is madness!

ALL trawlers? Please provide details.
I'd also like to see the math since Thailand has 230,000 Sq km of territorial water.

don't forget Westminster has plundered wealth from Scotland for years, now that it's dwindling the shoe best fits the other foot does it?,,,

try googling "the McCrone report"you may find where the bulk of Westminster's coffers came from, can't actually see why your below statement relates to the topic anyway, but I'm sure you do?

quote name="daveAustin" post="10941859" timestamp="1468040125"]Scotland leaving? Oh no. Shock horror! The UK will lose 10% of its populace... oh, but wait, it'll save double that on welfare and subsidies.

What the hell has it got to do with the EU, no wonder so many Brits are fed up with the EU.

If Thai fishing needs International policing then leave it to the UN.

"What the hell has it got to do with the EU..."

Well, because the EU is Thailand's customer and have every right to make demand?

The Thai government should let Farangs buy some of those boats and convert them to live aboards.

And let Farangs live in a Marina like in Los Angeles or San Diego.

I lived on a sailboat for a while, great fun.

In the states old tug boats are converted to very cool second homes.

But lets sink em'.

And who care about the future and the oceans collapsing? I don't need oxygen. It's not important.

Fully agree with you, been looking into that too. They are really cheap to buy now.
