Border crossing with a bike/car not registered under my name

Hi Friends,

Does any one knows what I would need to cross borders (e.g. Thailand to Cambodia and back) with a big bike or a car which is not registered under my name ?

Does it exist any official form with the "Garuda" to be signed by the owner ?

Thanks a lot in advance for helping.

With best regards.

Yes, you need a "power of attorney" form. It is usually only in Thai and while there are slight variations in some of them, most versions are very similar. It's basically a one page form, with details about the owner, what purpose/reason he/she gives to allow another person (in this case you) to drive their vehicle (in this case to Cambodia), etc. Nothing really complicated. The owner must sign and date the form and attach a 10 Baht stamp on the top right hand corner (some borders claim it should be 30 Baht - not sure who's right, I have passed borders with both 10 Baht and 30 Baht stamps and it was no problem - to be safe a 30 Baht stamp is probably better). A copy of the owners ID card or passport signed and dated should also be included.

Make sure to bring along the original blue book (for cars) or green book (for motorcycles) with you to the border. Even though it's not in your name, but customs needs it to compare the name on the registration to the owner's name on the power of attorney.

You can obtain the form (and stamps) from your nearest Land Transport Department (LTD) Office. The form is free and the stamps are priced according to the amount you need.

Forms can also be downloaded and printed from the web by typing the following phrase into Google Images (or another search engine): หนังสือมอบอำนาจ but then you would still need to go to your LTD office or the post office to purchase the stamps.

To cross into Cambodia, the best borders to use are Hat Lek / Koh Kong and Chong Chom / O'Smach. Other border crossings are uncertain. However, returning to Thailand through any common border should be fine.
