SURIN: Over 50 illegal motorcycle street racers were rounded up by officials in Surin’s Muang district Saturday night as the provincial administration began a crackdown on illegal street racing which has caused nuisance to many residents.

A large force of police and military police, in plainclothes and uniforms, went on patrol along the detour road, IQ, Sikhorapoom and Surin hospital intersections which illegal motorcycle street racers often gather in groups on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights before the races.

Throughout Saturday night and early Sunday morning, the officials managed to round up over 50 suspected racers and their pillion riders – most of them under 18 years old. Thirty motorbikes which were illegally souped up were impounded.

The officials later summoned their parents to the district police station to acknowledge the charges against their children before releasing all of them after giving them a lecture.

Surin provincial governor Atthaporn Singhavichai said that the crackdown was necessary because officials had received many complaints against the illegal racing. He added that the crackdown would continue until the problem is under control.

What a pathetic response, line their motorbikes up on the road and crush with a road roller.

Then require all the offenders to pick up rubbish on the street where they race on the nights they usually race wearing an orange vest. Total loss of face, will never come back there again.

So no punishment ? That will teach them

Strange seeing as in the other news Surin has just been praised for road safety prevention. Obviously more money wasted on red-tape and mutual back-slapping.

They were warned if they did it again they would be hit repeatedly over the head with an inflatable hammer!

it is fair to give education and encouragement a chance.

i totally agree with you that there is always a small core

of who have no respect for other citizens or the laws.such core,

always difficult to identify will require a different treatment.

Where does one go to complain about street racing? I guess in Chiang Mai we are to far north to deserve any police manpower. Mores the pity. Another answer would be to get rid of these shops that soup them up. I know of at least 2.
