Retirement Visa Question

Featured Replies

Everyone,

I came into Thailand with a 30 day Thai Visa waiver I extended it once and have until Aug 08, 2016.

Can you get a Thai Retirement Visa with a Thai Visa Waiver?

What is the process?

How much does it cost?

How long does it take? (Do I have enough time)

Is there a Multi-Entry Thai Retirement Visa or do you use re-entry permits?

I am 50 years of age have a Passport good until 2026. Presently, living in a Hotel and plan on travel around living in Hotels until find a spot to stay. Do not have a Thai Bank Account. Have adequate income.

Thanks for your help

You have about 12 days (minimum is 15 days remaining on your current permit to stay) to apply for a conversion to a 90 day non immigrant visa entry that would allow you to apply for a year extension of stay during the last 30 days of that 90 day entry.

You would need to apply in Bangkok or at a few nearby offices ant it will require two trips to immigration 15 days apart.. Where are you staying now?

The first thing you need to do obtain a income letter from your embassy to prove the required 65k baht income.

You probably will also need more than a hotel receipt to apply for the visa and extension.

The fee for the visa is 2000 and the extension is 1900 baht.

After you get the extension done you will need a re-entry permit if you want to travel. A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht and a multiple 3800 baht.

You can't get a "retirement visa" (it doesn't exist), but it's possible to go from a visa exempt entry to a 1 year extension of stay based on retirement.

To apply for a 1 year extension of stay (not a visa) based on retirement (over 50) you need to go through an admin process at an immigration office that converts your current visa exempt entry to a non immigrant entry, followed by an application for an extension of stay. Not all local offices can do this and you may have to do it in Bangkok.

  • You need at least 15 (maybe 21) days of your current stay remaining and it would require two visits to the immigration office.

On the first visit you pay 2,000 baht for them to process an application for a non immigrant visa for the purpose of later applying for an extension of stay. As you don't have a Thai bank you will need a certified (by your Embassy) income of at least 65K baht pm.

On the second visit, usually two weeks later, they will stamp a non 'O' visa in your passport that will immediately be used so they can also stamp a new 90 day permit to stay.

  • At this point, after two visits to immigration, all you have is a 90 day stay granted by a non immigrant visa, which is the same as having physically entered the country with a non immigrant visa.
  • During the last 30 (maybe 45) days of that stay you can go to your local immigration office and apply for the extension of stay (1,900 baht). You will need to show a certified (by your embassy) income of at least 60K baht pm OR 800K baht in a Thai bank account for at least 60 days OR a combination of the two.

Once you have been granted the extension of stay you can apply for a multiple entry re-entry permit. It costs 3,800 baht and allows for you to come and go as often as you want until the expiry of the extension of stay. You can apply for this anytime at your local office or at the airport before exiting. Single entry re-entry permits are also available for 1,000 baht.

Thanks I did not know this.

This will save me from doing a Visa Run to get a Tourist Visa which sounds like the incorrect Visa.

I am presently in Bangkok

How do you apply for a conversion to a 90 day non immigrant visa entry?

Do you need an appointment for the US Embassy to get income verification?

I don't have income coming in but I have access to my savings which is a healthy amount several times the required amount.. I was told by the Canadian Embassy they take what you have in your savings and divide by 12. Will the U.S. Embassy do the same thing.

What else do I need to do?

What application?

How do I meet the accommodation requirement? I mainly concern about the 90 day non-immigrant visa right now.

Thanks for your help

You apply for the visa at Chaeng Wattana immigration office.

You will need to complete a TM87 visa application form and attach a 4 X 6 cm photo to it. Download and print 2 sided: http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/download/pdf/tm87.pdf

You will need copies of your passport photo page, entry/permit to stay stamp, 30 day extension stamp and TM6 departure card.

You will need to get an appointment to do the income affidavit at the US embassy. Info can be found here: https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/ Info for completing the affidavit online or to download is here. https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/local-resources-of-u-s-citizens/notaries-public/income-affidavit/

Bangkok immigration will not ask for proof of residence. Just put the hotel address on the application form and show a copy of your receipt will be enough.

You will have almost 90 days to apply for the extension of stay which should be enough time to decide where you will be staying. You will then apply for it at the local immigration office for where you are settling down.

Edit: Immigration will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

I just checked for available appointment for notary service appointments at the embassy and there are several available this week.

I suggest you get the affidavit this week and if possible the same for applying for the visa.

I am not sure that savings in U.S counts as income but I could be wrong.
