BANGKOK:-- The Canadian man who is wanted in connection with a bank theft in Singapore and was captured by Thai police in Bangkok at the weekend has been named.

He is 37 year old David James Roche. He was apprehended at the Boxpackers Hostel in the Rachathewee area of the capital on Sunday.

Jakkrit Chaijinda of the immigration police made the official announcement outside an immigration detention center in Bangkok Wednesday afternoon, where he confirmed that Roche will be extradited and blacklisted from being able to re-enter Thailand.

The Thai authorities had been alerted by their Singapore counterparts that the suspect may be hiding in an ASEAN country after he managed to flee the island nation.

He is wanted for the theft of some 30,000 Singapore dollars or around 750,000 baht. The money was taken from the Standard Chartered bank branch in the Holland Village area of the city.

A picture of the suspect was also made available to the press.

His visa has been rescinded as he represents a "danger to society". He has been detained pending further action and has so far failed to provide any kind of statement to the police.

He robbed a bank in Singapore. They have cameras at the bank and the airport (and everywhere else). It's also a little island. Where did the robber expect to hide? Not too difficult to find a tall Caucasian in Singapore!

It is terrible to think that one sentence on a peace of paper can ruin your life so badly and costing your family a fortune. Not to mention the principal accused soon to be named a convict.

Well i presume that they caught the right guy .He stole the money so he must pay the consequences .I am sure that he is very sorry for ''being caught ''.

OK, this is my plan M, plan Z is the helium bottle. Plan L is Attila the Hun. Plan C is go home, but this rather depends on immigration and the NHS.

Hmmm…they don't say where he will be extradited to.

Apparently Singapore needs to file charges against him and provide conclusive evidence that identifies him (which they haven't done yet)…there's very little evidence in this instance….no weapon, no violence. Thais usually won't extradite unless there is a formal request with accompanying protocols.

Unless there has been an update Im not aware of.

^He was staying in a Budget hostel in KSR area .Hardly the choice of a man who thought he had got away with a sizable bank robbery .

He got away with a sum equivalent to the annual income of a security guard in a Singapore shopping mall.

That was the whole point I think.

He may have been successful if he had robbed a Thai bank and then fled to Singapore.

My old homeland Republic of Ireland has double doors on Bank exit ,so it would not work there .You go through one door and have to wait for the second door to open ,where he would be trapped .Asian Banks seem to have lax security by comparison .

A Canadian backpacker robbing a bank in Singapore. He should plead insanity.
