UNESCO World Heritage Committee keeps Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai off World Heritage Site in Crisis list

PARIS, 15 July 2016 (NNT) - The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has ruled that Thailand's Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai area is not a World Heritage Site in Crisis.

Thai Ambassador to France Sihasak Phuangketkeow, as the Kingdom's permanent representative to UNESCO and head of its delegation to the World Heritage Committee, reported that his mission was successful in persuading the committee to not list the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai area as a World Heritage Site in Crisis at its 40th meeting in Istanbul, Turkey in July. The committee has since issued a statement affirming that it has not added the area to the crisis list.

The body is now deliberating a request by Thailand to add the Kaeng Krachan area to its list of World Heritage Sites after the Kingdom made known it has remedied an issue involving human rights infringements against Karen Villagers there.
