Thai toilet v Farang Toilet

We have both styles of toilet in our place and until recently I did not consider the thai toilet for my daily chore.

I found some info on this item called a squatty potty which if you google it you can make or find your own. They sell this thing for £27+ shipping in uk and about same in Sweden. You will chuckle if you look for it but it serves a purpose.

I know a lot of you are old timers on here so if you can't fathom the thai toilet I'd suggest the stool solution (no pun intended) it will help you and you are welcome. Protect your colon fellas the farang toilets are preferable by many I'm sure but they are no good for you.

So you advice us to bring a squatty potty if we go to Isan?

Honestly i have no idea what an Isan toilet looks like, is it the hole in the ground model? Than a stool with a hole above it will improve it a lot i guess.

Our toilets are fine, 5 years old and had to be repaired few times.

I tend to post in my local forum only hence the Isan forum.

My advice is to buy a 9 inch high stool and use with a farang toilet. This will reflect the same posture as using a thai style toilet. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=thai+style+toilet&client=ms-android-samsung&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjCrPv4y_bNAhVMGsAKHZx5CbYQ_AUICCgC&biw=360&bih=559#imgrc=_ugeTaoLZdAufM%3A

Link above will show the toilet in question.

... it's just that, after a previous night of magical pet mak chilli something ...

- using the real squat job makes it such a mess to clean up the wayward sprays of...

whereas, having cheeks on the melamine makes things a little more controllable

- though the 9" stool is a good compromise for the best of both worlds

I have no problem with the squat toilet principle in fact they used to be my preference especially in public places, bars restaurants and the like.

Unfortunately with the advancing years, how quickly they advance, I doubt I could now get up from a squat in the toilet. blink.png

I'm sure there still are many squat toilets around the country especially in rural areas, how do the older people manage? Is there always some relative or friendly neighbor willing to hoist them up from the squat position at the end of business? whistling.gif

I did read somewhere that the squat toilet users were more prone to piles than the western type ,Wifes parents house that we built had a western type which (of course)replaced by a mini western style without seat!!

It's the other way around... The Western toilet usage is more prone to piles

Tell you what fellas, the older you get the more difficult/impossible it becomes to use the Thai/squat toilet. Once the arthritis gets into your knees, and with the complete absence of handle grips on each side, I now find it impossible to get down to use a squat toilet. As an aside, did you know that once you turn 60 you may use the disabled facilities in the hospitals, filling stations and supermarkets? That's right, they are also there for the older person to use and what a blessing that is. There is usually a lot more space in the cubicle, they are western style WCs and they have support bars too. As Michael Caine might say, "Not many people know that."

That is actually a very good idea and a product should be available to combat this problem. This looks primitive yes but it is a solution and well marketable in thailand and any country where these thai style toilets are. I would not provide it as permanent solution RE: screwed into walls it could be freestanding. Nice solution. Surely there is already a product like this for old thai people and expat retirees alike.

Sometime ago the govt intended to replace squat toilets with the more Western style in public toilets. The reason given was to reduce the incidence of broken ankles. I can confirm that on farms I visited over many years ( my occupation ) the incidence of broken ankles was very high, mainly due to the wet conditions. Where they were replaced with Western style, no more broken ankles. Squatting reduces the incidence of colon cancer particularly in males.
