LG Workers Claim They Have Been Mistreated

About 300 workers from South Korean firm LG Electronics gathered at the Ministry of Labor yesterday morning to protest against alleged mistreatment by their South Korean boss under Cambodian law. “In total, there are 16 points and the main points are the reinstatement of their [union] membership, payment for death insurance and to not disallow leave on Friday, Saturday and Monday,” said Mann Seng Hak, a leader of the Free Trade Union. “If these days are not allowed for leave like this, it is forceful.

“Some secondary demands include a request to build a nursery center and no forced overtime,” he added. One worker, Tat Kimchheng, was removed from the union for his involvement in a protest demanding compensation and insurance for a female colleague who fell and died from a commuter truck, which the company tried to hide from the National Social Security Fund. They are supposed to report to the fund according to the laws, he added.

“We have experienced a lot of pressure from our South Korean boss who is tough on the workers and those actions are against the law. We were forced to work overtime and some haven’t received maternity leave from the company that they are supposed to get,” said Mr. Kimchheng. He added that one woman at the company who took nine days off to deliver her baby only received payment for three days.
