Non O-A visa in the UK even though I don't live there

Featured Replies

I have been resident in Norway for 23 years and now living for a part of the year in Thailand.

Just wondering as I am returning to England for a few weeks whether I can apply for

a NON O - A visa (eventually applying for retirement visa after 90 days) in England rather than travelling

back to Norway.

You could apply for the OA long stay visa if you are at UK citizen at the embassy in London. A OA visa allows one year entries for a year from the date of issue.

Requirements are here: http://thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/51

I do not know if it is possible now.

However, I am a U.S. citizen, and I did it in October 2010 on a short trip to the U.K.

That may no longer be possible, but it was in 2010.

I am certain you only got a single entry non-o visa in the UK not a OA visa.

Sorry, but in October 2010 I received a one year multi-entry Non O visa from Hull based on "friends and relatives" living in Thailand. I believe I was one of the last few people who received such a visa before Hull was no longer allowed to issue that visa in November 2010.

I was working as a civilian consultant for the U.S. military in Crete Greece at the time.

I filled out my retirement papers for that job, then caught a plane to the U.K.

Took a train from London to Hull, and applied there with my U.S. passport for a one year multi entry Non O visa to Thailand.

I received the visa on 15 October 2010.

I extended that visa for 3 times based on retirement in Thailand in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Unfortunately, I was unable to meet the financial requirement in 2014 due to being in hospital in Thailand, so I could not renew the visa/extension then.

As I said, I believe the rules have been changed since 2010, and it might not be possible now, but I did it in October 2010.

As I said it was a Non O multi entry one year visa NOT an O-A visa.

Even a Brit can no longer get a 90 day in London now, unless they are over 65 with a state pension. We tried earlier this year but were refused for being "too young" (62 and 58 with a company pension). Same applies at all Honorary Consulates. A one year OA Retirement Visa can be had as a UK resident, with all the associated paperwork (police check, health check, bank statement etc.), but only in London. The scope of the Honorary Consulates has been significantly reduced in the last couple of years. My wife is from another EU country (been here 20+ years) and was verbally asked if she lived here. At that point, there was no real proof that she lived here for any length of time, other than the address on the police check and the address on the bank statement.

The website does say that if you are from another country, you also have to get a police check from that country. We went through the hoops to get a Police check from her home country and get it translated into English. When we presented that in London, we were just told that it was not required as my wife lived here.
