Another Evil Pattaya Somtam Seller Bites The Dust...

Featured Replies

Spotted yesterday.

Do these (literally) poor people have to buy back their livelihoods later? Or are they sold elsewhere?

Looks like it's heading off to set up at a market somewhere. very common sight around the place

with some going to a different market every day of the week and in some cases two in one day.

Nope !

That car is from the City Of Pattaya and they sometimes round up sellers who are in area's where they are not allowed.

They can get their carts back after they have paid a fine. (not sure about the amount)

Now the strongmen have begun the big cleanup !!

... ???

Well, think again, let's start at the low end and hit the simple people.

Less resistance expected (so far).

Same everywhere in the country.

They have to pay a fine that amounts to a very good days takings...then they can take their stuff back to try earn some money...rinse and repeat.

Obviously the situation is different down there to where I am.

( By the way, just noticed the lights on the cab and sign on the side facepalm.gif )

This particular practice is going on already for a couple of years.

It's funny (not really the right word for it as it's sad for the sellers) to watch when one of those cars comes into a Soi where are a lot of the sellers and they scramble to get away. But they (City Police) always catch one or 2 and load them on the truck. And after they have left about 10-20 minutes later the other sellers come back to the same area as nothing has happened wink.png

They'd confiscated it at Bali Hai, so not as part of the new street vendor clampdown outside the malls on Beach Road.

I've seen them confiscate carts at a couple of Sois in the last couple of years. The most notorious Soi for this is Soi 6 (so that Soi is notorious in more then 1 way thumbsup.gif )

You have to find that out yourself thumbsup.gifbiggrin.png

If there's one thing that Soi 6 needs is less bloody salengs (sidecar food and tat sellers). It's always been a bit of a challenge parking down that way but more recently there's more salengs and increasing bad attitudes when you ask them to move out of an open parking space. I guess that means there's more hungry slappers working the strip though.

Every vendor pays unscrupulous city staff or police.

The city staff & police rent the public area like they own it. Every square centimeter of public property is to be exploited for personal profit.

The vendors often pay to park the gear after hours too.

These guys are heartless. Don't pay and this is what happens.

Confirm it yourself.

In fact I'll loan you a table and and a stock of handicrafts or snacks. You set it up on public property and have your Thai girlfriend sell the stuff.

Now be sure to get a stopwatch and tell me how long it took for the municipal authorities to be in her pocket.

You're either a troll, exceptionally naive or a police volunteer to write that.

It's like the sellers in front of Royal Garden (Beach-side): for years and years they were haunted by police and city hall.....vendors set up their stuff in a pack-n-go modus.

NOW........they've set up a "decent" small market catering the Chinese tourists in a way that they can't pack-n-go anymore. Proper displays, tables and counters.

For sure someone is being paid.
