NARATHIWAT: -- A group of soldiers and paramilitary rangers assigned to provide protection to teachers in Narathiwat’s Muang district escaped unhurt after they narrowly missed a roadside bomb explosion believed detonated by militants.

Wreckage of a 20-kg gas cylinder and bomb shrapnels were found scattering on the road in Ban Manangkayee in Tambon Manangkayee. A bomb demolition squad which was rushed to the scene said that the explosive device was placed at the foot of a concrete pole beside the road.

The teacher protection troopers were on a foot patrol to check the route through which a group of teachers would travel through to their school when the bomb was suddenly detonated by militants believed to be hiding somewhere not far away.

The incident came one day after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha led his key cabinet ministers and military top brass paid a visit to Narathiwat on Monday for a meeting to discuss development projects and security for the strife-torn Deep South.
