Storm Deaths Rising This Year

Featured Replies

Natural disasters killed more people and damaged more property in the first seven months of this year than in the same period last year, according to the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM). Keo Vy, cabinet chief and a spokesman for NCDM, said yesterday that 12 people had died, 161 had been injured and 8,000 houses or administrative buildings had been damaged by natural disasters between January and July.

These numbers do not include casualties from lightning strikes, however, which are counted separately by the NCDM. “A total of 1,446 houses were completely destroyed and 6,415 houses were damaged. There were 39 schools and another 33 administrative buildings that were also destroyed,” Mr. Vy said of the storm-related damage.

During the same period last year, only 10 people died, about 100 were injured and 7,330 houses were damaged in storms, he added. Mr. Vy said that in addition to the storm-related deaths, 78 deaths, 100 injuries and 60 cattle deaths resulted from lightning strikes during the first seven months of this year.
