CDC urges UN to be impartial, avoid making unfounded criticism

BANGKOK, 28 July 2016 (NNT) – The Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) has defended against criticism by the United Nations regarding the arrest of individuals who distort the content of the draft charter.

CDC Chairman Meechai Ruchuphan insisted Thai police have never arrested people for disagreeing with the draft constitution as claimed by the UN. Instead, he clarified that only those who disseminate false or distorted information about the charter with the intent of misleading the public would be considered in violation of the Public Referendum Act and would face legal action.

Mr Meechai said he would like to ask the UN how passing on false information could be interpreted as exercising freedom of expression. He suggested that the UN maintain its neutrality, otherwise the organization’s own credibility could be compromised.

Previously, authorities issued an arrest warrant against Ms Tassanee Buranupakorn, former MP for Chiang Mai from the Pheu Thai Party, after evidence indicated her involvement in the production and distribution of false letters aimed at discrediting the draft charter. The suspect has reported herself to police and is now in custody.

Maybe the problem is someone is distorting or disseminating what a democratic system is?

LOL cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

The old fart is bonkers...

His lips are moving and we know what that means.

CDC chairman Ruchuphan reflects the Thai Elites audacity in general.

Words like "distorted information " can by their interpretation mean simply , pointing out facts.

Ironically , the ex Prime minister of the Democrats mr Abhisit is even indicating today he is against the charter and says why.

Will he be accused in their Witch Hunts.?

Personally , I am grateful to the CDC chairman being critical of the UN so bluntly.

As sanctions are now more realistically likely in the interim .

UN isn't an organisation that appreciates being told its credibility is lacking by a military installed Government mouth piece.

I hope these people have suitable drain pipes to hide in down the track?

Clearly the tide is turning now

Time for some "attitude adjustment" for the UN. It must irritate the ju ta that they can't silence everyone and that everyone doesn't believe them.

The Un dont care what you think, Prayut your mandate has finished the countries a mess just go for god sake.

So it would seem that according to the junta's interpretation that the UN is now "distorting and disseminating fact's", ok well are they going to try to arrest, charge and gaol the UN like they do their own people? I'd like to see that. They already threatened the UN rapporteur of breaking Thai law.

Oh the irony, A junta accusing the UN of lying.

Ok junta huggers, defend this if you can, but as usual you will avoid issues that are uncomfortable and go quiet which levees you as just not credible...

Anyone expressing a "no" can now be charged with disseminating distorted information.......

Meechai suggests that the UN maintain its neutrality!

Yet, according to a report in The Nation (http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/Top-Chiang-Mai-official-suspended-in-draft-probe-30291488.html), he is quoted as saying "...If the charter draft is rejected, the reform procedures will be in disarray...''.

Just proves there's no fool like an old fool.

Meechai is one of the countries problems, and the sooner he goes and let new fresh blood into the CDC the better.

What happened to the previous thanks to the UN and Ban Ki-Moon for their understanding and support of everything the junta's doing ?

The Thai authorities have been lying through their teeth when it comes to the UN, first there was the handshakes issue with Obama they made a huge deal out of, then it was distorting what the UN and concerned representatives said with regards to the human rights issue, then the ludicrous claim that Prayuth personally called BKM and talked/lectured him for 25 mins and then said the "UN understand our situation is unique"

The PTP were lying <deleted>, this lot are every bit as bad.

I wonder what Meechai's "riches" sit at?

Meechai now lectures the UN on Thailand's domestic politics.

Normally a role reserved for the Foreign Minister, DPM's and PM to present the government's position - true of any parlimentary government.

Prayut has completely lost control over Meechai as Meechai seems to become more unraveled each day as the referendum vote approaches.

Now Prayut knows what the Thai people have had to experience with Prayut for the last 26 months.

Karma indeed!

I think he should go to NY and lecture them in person rolleyes.gif
