Customs officials at the Trapaing Phlong International Checkpoint in Tbong Khmum province seized dozens of untaxed smartphones from two Vietnamese on Saturday after receiving a tip-off from their Vietnamese counterparts, a border police official said. Nhem Borin, a police official stationed at the gateway, said that after receiving the tip-off about illegal iPhone 6 Plus smartphones, customs officials checked the two Vietnamese and discovered 72 untaxed iPhones with them.

“The customs officials seized the iPhones. They were stopped because they were bringing in smartphones that haven’t been taxed. It is not an arrest, just an order for them to pay the tax,” he said. “The total number of iPhones was 72. Our Vietnamese counterpart tipped us off and we checked them and found those phones were not taxed just like he said.”

Mr. Borin said the phones were being temporarily held at the provincial customs office and as long as the duo pays the required tax, customs will return the phones. “The phones have not been given to the two Vietnamese yet. They are still being held because they haven’t paid the taxes. The phones were sent to the Tbong Khmum provincial customs headquarters yesterday,” he added.
