Police continue to suppress crime ahead of charter referendum

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, 2 August 2016 (NNT) – A deputy commissioner of the Royal Thai Police has paid a visit to the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima to follow up on the progress of crime suppression in the lead-up to the constitutional referendum.

At the Training Center of the Provincial Police Region 3 in Mueang district of Nakhon Ratchasima, Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul joined in the announcement of results of the police crackdown on crime which was conducted from July 11-30 in areas under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Police Region 3. The operation was intended to prevent law violations pertaining to the use and possession of weaponry and narcotic drugs prior to August 7, when residents are set to take part in the constitutional referendum.

The police reported that 234 unregistered rifles and handguns had been confiscated. A total of 1,825 suspects were apprehended on drug-related charges, with the seizure of over 200,000 methamphetamine pills, 341 grams of dried marijuana and over 95 grams of crystal meth or ice. Another 1,109 suspects were arrested for involvement in gambling.

On this occasion, Pol Gen Srivara gave policy guidelines to officers of the Provincial Police Region 3 and all local police stations in the eight lower northeastern provinces. He instructed them to closely keep an eye on happenings in their neighborhood during the public referendum, station a security team in each village and coordinate with the Election Commission to ensure a smooth voting process.
