Officials are investigating Blue Bay Resort on Koh Yao Yai, east of Phuket, as it is a subsidiary of now de-registered Chinese tour company Tranlee Travel Co Ltd, which was found to have been formed illegally by using nominee shareholders. Photo: Darawan Naknakhon

PHUKET: Military personnel and officials from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo) arrived on Koh Yai Yai island, east of Phuket, in force on Saturday (July 30) to investigate Blue Bay Resort.

The resort is one of 16 subsidiaries of Tranlee Travel Co network, which was named last month by Royal Thai Police Deputy Commissioner Gen Srivara Ransibrahmanakul as suspected of illicit dealings.

Officials arriving at the 330-room resort, of which parts are still under construction, were greeted by two men: company representative “Mr Witthaya” and lawyer “Mr Apichat”.

The pair presented to the officers seven NorSor 3 land documents as evidence to the company’s right to occupy the 19 rai that the resort covers.

The men told officials that all 19 rai was bought by shareholders from a partnership in May 2016, and they presented permits for buildings at the site.

Abuse of land ownership is rife amongst big resorts and hotel chains. Is there really the political will to see this through in every case or is this just a one-off showcase? The robber barons vs the sea gypsies is an example of such an abuse currently in progress.

You may want to have a look back at how much land has been seized in Phuket over the past year- its quite significant. hardly a one-off 'showcase'.

I wish they'd come west again. There's still plenty to be done on the main island.

Come down to Rawai at 4am, cock your ears and find out where all that bl**dy noise is coming from.
