Do you think that my son would have been allowed to play? He is dual nationality, Thai and British. He has a Thai ID card and passport and also a UK passport.

You are wrong!

We like Thailand for the freedom it offers us. The organizer saw a foreigner that would give the other team an unfair advantage so banned her.

Who wants to live in a country that doesn't even allow you to take a photo of kids playing volleyball, according to my Ozzie mate?

I have 4 half-caste kids and they've always had MANY more advantages over Thais.

You lost me there, your post makes no sense at all! Banning a child from playing for her school is just wrong, no ifs or buts, it is just wrong! Could you tell me how many kids you have, tell me there nationality, and then tell me which schools they go to - The answers will be None, None and None!

I take a wild guess here, as an old soccer-coach back in west. There is a small chance that something is lost here, maybe in translation.....

Maybe it is so easy that this falang-child is a quite bad player, and they do not want her, they have better player...... So she is not good enough!!!!  Maybe hard to swallow for a parent,, have seen that before too many times..

But this is just a guess of course..

Hogwash.  More likely the opposite is true:  If she has both parents as farang, she's probably taller than the other girls her age.  That's an attribute for volleyball.  It's much more likely her prowess at the game is the reason the opposing team put forth the ridiculous racist restriction.

So many forget what our own country was like when we were young.

Ah, the good old days when you could say what you were thinking without worrying about political correctness, when the people you were talking to took no offence because none was meant, when you could call your black friends <deleted> because they didn't care.  (That was my <deleted> by the way, not the forum's.)

Compare that to nowadays, where the permanently offended get offended by a compliment if it is said with the wrong tone of voice or look in your eye, where there is an industry based on monitoring for non-PC comments...

Beam me up Scotty,

That's a bit of an eye's opener, basically, what's happening to the "little farang", it's just a reflection of what's happening on a larger scale to the "bigger farangs" in Thailand, you will be able to "attend", but forget about being considered a human being, that's forbidden because thais cannot compete, i'll bet there must to be at least a law about it somewhere...:gigglem:

It's not happening to me,what ever it is.

yea you mean in those fun non-PC days? when no one cared about colour, race or creed?  no ISIS?  no mass killings?  no riots?  yea I remember

I went to a UK school for one year, when I was 13.  It was at an all-boys boarding school (parents were a continent away).  I was captain of the school's basketball team, even though I was 4 yrs younger than the average player.   Each game we played, I scored over half the total points of both sides.  In effect, it was like a basketball lesson for the other boys because I was from the US, and the Brits were neophytes at the game.  (it would have been similar to a British boy going to play soccer in the US at that time - when American boys were awful at soccer).  Anyhow, there was never any mention of me being disqualified for not being a British subject (or object or preposition).  After each game, the opposing team players would come up to me beaming and shake my hand with genuine appreciation for a game 'well played.'

Hahaha talk about so many people here are at a complet and full denial... Just looking for the racist angle, not seeing that a worthless player is just not wanted.

And you mr Hogwash, a complete and utter nonsens reasoning... because she is taller she is a good volleyboll player. OMG.. are you for real......

If she is a pure western girl than I understand why she is out, if she is a mix than it is up to the mixed parents to fix the papers and stop crying crap here.

We know well : thai are racialist. Thanks to that, they can protect their nation.

We like Thailand, then we must accept that fact. The problem is for mixed blood children only.

Western Europeans should be racialist. Then they could protect their lands and nations as well.

Gee,i think you just invented a new word to suit your theory.

I was under the impression state school issue transcripts themselves.

This is completely new to me that some government body would issue a "high school certificate". If for some reason a school transcript would need to be certified, the Ministry of Eduction would certify providing the pupil can show she held the correct visa during her time of attendance.

PS: I was talking to a girl from Burma the other days. She came here as a (illegal) refugee and initially lived in a camp. She later went to high school here. I didn't see the certificate she got from that Thai school, but know for a fact that she was accepted at a Thai university for a degree course.

A Mor 6 (or Mor 3) certificate is an official government sanctioned certificate that cannot be given to a non-Thai national. The school can issue a letter stating the student has completed and passed the syllabus but this is not an official document.

My, you're easily lost. My 4 kids are all half Thai/British. They have all finished school.

I sincerely hope that you're not actually a teacher, Paul.

Sadly, many "expat" teachers here are very racist. At least he didn't call himself ajarnpaul or khunpaul :cheesy:

Thai isn't even a race.

OP:  "I know there are many farang teachers working in Thai schools. Does anyone have any experience with this discrimination problem?"

As a "farang" teacher working in Thai schools for over a dozen years, I cannot be too encouraging.

As foreign teachers, we are locked out of teacher meetings, teacher trips, teacher "freebies" (giveaway shirts, etc.), and all of the teacher benefits (low-cost loans, insurance, etc.).  Our school sponsored a dinner & concert a few years ago, and all teachers had free admittance--except the foreign teachers, of course, who were expected to cough up 300B for "special tickets" for the evening.   Of course, the foreign teachers didn't show up, and then they were bad-mouthed for not having a team spirit.

The discrimination is open, shameless, and deeply entrenched.

Don't hold your breath.

I have none of those issues. Your school sucks.

I'd have thought after 12 years you'd have found a way out if that BS.

Perhaps not integrating. Can you speak fluent Thai after 12 years?

I've met language teachers at my kids' schools who couldn't speak the language of the country they taught in for over a decade. Hard to believe but true.

Last week I met a guy who said he'd been here for 18 years and spoke Thai, he didn't even know what month it was!!!!!!!!!

I still have not figured out how the USA Olympic Basketball "Dream" Team was made up entirely of professional athletes and you want me to figure out why your little girl can't play volleyball in the some backwoods Thai elementary school??  In this country the rules are there ain't no rules.  Grease a few palms and see what happens.

Yes, and the reality is that in practice no one asks for such a certificate and the transcript issued by the school is the first thing people need to provide, especially when they go on to higher eduction.

If Mor 6 or Mor 3 is the person's highest qualification than not having an official certificate might not be particularly good ten years later, as they have to show some dated transcripts or request new ones from the school that by then might have lost them. The point is that regardless of absurd governmental regulations about certification practices, there is no need for the school to arbitrarily discriminant against pupils on the bases of nationality and refusing them to part take in a sports competition. Neither can we use this policy to judge the OP's personal situation as to why he deems this school adequate or inadequate for his child. I certainly would not make such comment, because I have not seen the school and don't know anything so ever about the OP's life. I'm sorry to spell it out so directly, dear Mr Briggsy; I hope you understand my hesitations in agreeing with some of these posts here on this topic. We hope it somehow works out for the OP and his daughter. :)

Thats the point...white people do not vote for Trump because he is white but black people vote for obama because he is black and have said as much and nobody calls that "racist".

But we have moved completely off topic.

I hope the farang girl is allowed to participate in future sporting events.

Anyone know how we can add a chain of quotes lime in the old days? Before yesterday?

Conversations lose context when they only allow for one previous quote.

thanks

Of course white people vote for Trump because he is white. Old white men are is his main demographic. They are losing their power because their numbers are shrinking and they are afraid. Perfectly logical. And what do you mean by " your kind".  And after you make this comment you say let's get back on track. You derailed it.

Oh, and yes, you were too PC to say "inferior" instead you said "different".

And , yes, blacks were kept out of athletic competitions because of the fear they would win. Hitler certainly didn't like seeng a black win in the Olympics.

Now back to the topic.

Do you think the people criticizing what happened to that poor child, would have behaved differently if the parts involved were inverted, as in a thai child denied to be treated as all her other fellow western students?

Maybe it's time to wake up and smell the coffee, there is nothing absolutely nothing that could justify these abuses, no matter the nationality or race involved, who try to justify it are as wrong as the ones who did it, no excuses.

Really? And just how long did you live here before spending all your money and then got out?

Whether you stay for 2 weeks or 20 years…..the rule is the same….come here, spend your money, then get out.

I wish other countries would give the same treatment to Thais. Their attitude is despicable.

Just a matter of time before this comment came up again for the 1 millionth time..  So if we want the tit for tat thing going on then Thailand should stop all visa exempt entries for every country that does not do the same

for Thai's?  I dont agree with what the school did and I think their might be more to the story as I dont see how an ex-pat child can go to a government school with out the proper documents mainly a Thai ID.

I will reiterate that the daughter in question cannot be officially enrolled at a govt. school if she is not a Thai national. There will have to be some sort of financial deal or otherwise (e.g. sympathy from local school - some education is better than none) to allow the daughter to attend classes. She cannot receive any sort of Thai high school certificate or diploma showing attainment.

It is also noteworthy that the OP with no previous posting history has long since disappeared.

And that most posters just take the OP's post at face value and just post a rant.

It is important to consider a wider picture and the background situation.

Briggsy,

Thanks for your singular voice of reason on this thread.

So far you have failed to get anything correct in this thread.

I have no desire to live in Thailand or even visit this place but I am married to a Thai woman and her family responsibilities occasionally bring us here.

I have never been burnt in Thailand, not even by the sun.

Your post is quite bazaar. I simply posted a singularly positive note of good cheer and appreciation to the only poster here who is dealing in facts and you freak out all bitter and twisted.

its up to you if you want to take this personally or not but you are now being placed on Ignore.

Life is too short to waste time on morons.
