Justice Minister unworried about the public referendum result

BANGKOK, 4 August 2016 (NNT) – The Justice Minister is not worried about what the result of the public referendum on August 7 turns out to be.

Justice Minister Gen. Paiboon Koomchaya said today that the government is letting everything run its course now that there are only a few days before the public referendum is held.

Gen. Paiboon stated that the current government has already amended the interim charter to pave the way for the referendum and to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the process.

The Justice Minister said that he has never worried whether or not the draft charter passes the public referendum while noting that he is aware that there could be some problems because there are people who stand to lose influence under the code of law.

Concerning calls for the use of parts of the 1997 Constitution and the 2007 Constitution to help in any rewriting of the current draft charter, Gen. Paiboon said that any law will be found problematic by someone and that the public should focus more on the intent of the National Council for Peace and Order, which is to prevent a repeat of all the problems the country had seen before May 22, 2014.

And that is exactly what they do, and that is why they will vote "no" without having read the whole bloody document.

His statement reads like it doesn't really matter what is in the constitution, in which he has a point because it will only be an interim document for a couple of years till the next coup takes place.

If the vote is for approval the military will have permission to continue to run the country.

If the vote is for rejection the military will continue to run the country without permission.

It's a pity that without credible independent monitoring of the referendum we will never know what the vote really is.  And without proper open debate on the merits of the charter we will never know how the vote might have turned out with informed voters.

"...focus more on the intent of the NCPO..."

Regardless of the referendum result, their intent has been to enshrine in Law a complete amnesty for the junta and its cronies.

Whether it be through the 2014 (Interim) charter, or via the final section of the 2016 (Draft) document being voted on this Sunday - either way, they have nothing to worry about!

The BBC is airing a report on the vote with a member of the CDC extolling the virtues of the charter and explaining how people are campaigning everyday on social media and politicians giving their views and anyone who has been arrested is because they've committed a wrong.

A political scientist is giving a totally opposite view talking about elitism,  a continuing role for the military and the current atmosphere of control and oppression.

It's make your mind up folks unless it's already been made for you.
