Police said explosives were packed inside this gas canister in a truck abandoned Wednesday night at a gas station in Yala province.

YALA — Police say they defused a large car bomb, preventing it from going off Wednesday night at a gas station in Yala province.

What could have been a large-scale attack in the region known for years of separatist violence was prevented after the station’s staff alerted police to a suspicious vehicle left at the station in Raman district, according to police.

YALA: -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police in Yala province last night narrowly defused a powerful homemade bomb hidden in a pickup truck which two persons in hijab dress drove to a patrol station to refuel but abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

The unusual abandoning of the Mazda pickup truck by the two people who concealed their faces with Muslim woman dress prompted the station employee to immediately alert the police as it was feared a bomb was in the truck.

The incident happened at the Quality petrol station in Tambon Kayuboko of Raman district.

The station employee told police that the driver of the truck told him to fill the tank full and then walked away with another person in hijab dress to a waiting motorcycle and escaped.

He then immediately alerted police.

EOD police arrived and sealed off the station.

The check of the licence plate number of the truck showed it was a fake licence plate.

A 15-kilo gas tank was on the truck.

EOD took two hours to clear the area after it was found the gas tank filled with 80 kilos of explosive was a remote improvised bomb.

All wireless telecommunication signals surrounding the petrol station was then blocked.

EOD police later successful defused the bomb.

The vehicle was stolen and the driver shot dead and two passengers injured in a robbery by southern insurgents on July 26.

The original dark grey colour of the truck was later repainted in bronze, and the Yala licence plate number changed to Pattani.

Security officials were looking through all CCTV cameras in the area to trace back to where it was driven from in a manhunt for the insurgents, and their escape routes.
