BANGKOK: -- Former Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee was on Thursday given one-year suspended jailterm by the Supreme Court’s criminal division for political office holders after he was found guilty of malfeasance in office regarding the appointment of three directors of the board of Bank of Thailand in 2008.

Mr Surapong named Mr Sathit Limpongphan, then an executive of Thai Military Bank; Mr Vichit Supinit, then an independent director of Thai Military Bank; and Mr Chaiwat Vibulseth, then vice chairman of Krung Thai Bank as the chairman and directors of Bank of Thailand. However, the government of prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva later revoked Mr Surapong’s appointment order.

The court pointed out that the appointment of the three top executives of Thai Military Bank and state-owned Krungthai Bank as board members of the central bank amounted to a matter of conflict of interest which was in violation of the Bank of Thailand Act.

The court initially handed down one-year imprisonment and 20,000 baht fine on Mr Surapong but later suspended the jailterm on the grounds that the former finance minister has never served a jailterm and the extent of the damage from the appointment was limited.
