PHUKET:-- The Phuket Election Commission (PEC) confirmed today that the sale of alcohol is prohibited throughout Thailand August 6-7, as the country goes to the polls to vote on the National Referendum.

“The alcohol ban is from 6pm on August 6, ahead of voting the next day, until midnight on the 7th. It is applicable to all retail shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and convenience stores,” said PEC Director Kittipong Thiengkunakrit.

Anyone caught in violation of the ban faces a fine of up to 10,000 baht, six months imprisonment, or both.

Feel sorry for all the tourists who are not voting. On holiday and all you want is a drink to relax and unwind.

Pure hypocrisy! Thailand is the biggest consumer in Asean.!

Not a big deal for me personally, but why do they always hit the weekends with these shenanigans? It messes up ordinary peoples' businesses and eats into folks' leisure time.

Probably because the vast majority of Thais have Sunday off I would have thought, a bit like back home, so more people can get to the voting stations.

It's just part of living in Thailand. Just stock up with booze  in advance.

Even if you can stock up in advance, it is still annoying. Like why in the first place?

Well, it looks like 06 Aug is a normal day,  with all restaurants and bars allowed to serve alcohol until midnight.

Sunday is total closure,  unless you know where to go.

Maybe their should be a referendum on banning the sale of alcohol on election days...

yeh! keep all those drunken farangs from protesting,  right ?

Well  later today, it looks like you can drink on and on and on.  Up to you as they say

The 3 Chinese Doctors i chatted with on holidays here don't drink alcohol but like to go out dancing.
the Muslim family staying in the building for 2 weeks...I'm guessing it doesn't register for them.
Friends from my home country last month...here to relax..

There are plenty of people out there who don't base decisions about holidays, enjoyment of life, relaxation, fun, socialising around alcohol.

Why would they need to be drinking to be fun and good company?

No alcohol starting at 6pm on the sixth....so not quite normal, as many watering holes do not open until the afternoon.

Even worse on the 7th...as no alcohol before midnight.  Most places are closed by that time.  A few good ones open.

If you drink heavily before 6pm on the sixth, you could pass out for the 30 hours of prohibited drinking, and not worry too much.

I think they intend on performing the horizontal limbo.

not unusual, i once overheard a plumber state he came to Thailand to "lay some pipe". Must have liked working holidays I guess !

No doubt there will be a lot of special coffees being drunk in restaurants on the 7th.

I used to go to the Baiyoke lobby bar. Prices were reasonable and if I got bored I could practice my golf.

Of course it only effects those who booze, can't do anything social without a drink or get withdrawal symptoms if they miss one. For most people, no big deal. For the bar stool brigade, crushing, as no where else to go or anything to do.

I sure don't want to be under any possible influence before casting MY vote!

Oh wait...

This must be Thailand.
