Transocean Rig Goes Aground Off Scotland

Featured Replies

Early Monday morning, the semisubmersible Transocean Winner went aground on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. The rig was in transit, towed by the anchor handling tug Alp Forward, and the tug lost the tow in severe weather. The Alp Forward was unable to reestablish a connection and high winds blew the Winner aground.

UK maritime authorities said in a statement that "following the grounding of the semi-submersible drilling rig Transocean Winner on the Isle of Lewis, the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention Hugh Shaw is now in discussions with the owners Transocean and the salvors . . . There is 280mt of diesel on board and this situation is being monitored . . . SMIT Salvage has been mobilised to deal with the incident. Police Scotland and HM Coastguard Rescue Teams are also on scene.

Wasn't this the same inept company that caused the Gulf of Mexico spill that BP got most of the blame for? If it's American owned, I suggest suing them for everything they've got.

Bad news.  It's a Swiss company.  At least it is for tax dodging purposes.

^ Not sure how you reckon TOI is Swiss? They were "partly" responsible for the Maconda incident, they were working for BP.

In this incident the Captain of the towing vessel would have been in charge!

Wikipedia says Swiss.

Transocean Ltd. is one of the world's largest offshore drilling contractors and is based in Vernier, Switzerland

Lots of controversy at the time of Deepwater Horizon disaster around BP (British), Transocean (Swiss) and Halliburton (Registered at the time in Dubai) spilling their load in the Gulf of Mexico.

^ OK, remember now! they moved their head office to Switzerland a few years back.

Don't know if this makes them a "Swiss" company as such? just for tax reasons?

They trade on NYSE, second biggest share holder is Carl Icahn, the rest of the intricacies are beyond me! they can be sued in a US court as happened with Maconda incident. (Deepwater Horizon)

Cheers

Don't feel bad.  You wouldn't be the only one scratching his head over an offshore drilling company headquartered in a country that has no offshore, never mind any offshore drilling.

But they do have a kick-ass banking system where you can hide your profits from pesky tax collectors around the world from countries where you actually do make your money.

Transocean stock was down 6.8% on the day yesterday, now down 80% from 5 years ago, I wonder why! Not the luckiest company around...

A salvage team including members from Smit and from Transocean are preparing for a refloat attempt of the grounded semisubmersible Transocean Winner, and if all goes well and conditions are favorable, the rig could be off the rocky shores of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland as early as this weekend.

On Friday, salvors continued a process to remove diesel from the rig's pontoon tanks. Two of four tanks were damaged in the grounding, leading to the loss of some 12,000 gallons of fuel.

No signs of pollution have been observed and authorities believe that the diesel dispersed and evaporated. Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage & Intervention, told the BBC that the fuel release represented an "extremely low risk" to the environment.

Local Leaders Call for Local Work on Grounded Rig

Local politicians in the Outer Hebrides have called on rig operator Transocean to repair or scrap the damaged drilling rig Transocean Winner at a facility not far from where the rig went aground earlier this month.

Councilor Angus Campbell of the Western Isles Council wrote to the firm to ask if the rig could be fixed or recycled at Arnish, a manufacturing and transshipment facility with a 350-foot deepwater quay, covered work areas and equipment for maintaining and fabricating steel structures for offshore installations. The offshore supply chain in the UK has seen revenue drop sharply due to the offshore industry downturn, and Campbell cited the boost to the local economy that work on the rig could bring.

“We are pleased that you continue to engage with the local supply chain and, given the significant and positive economic impact to the islands, would now ask that serious consideration be given to the use of local facilities and engineering expertise in carrying out the repairs," Campbell said in a letter. “We would be very happy to work with Transocean, Smit Salvage and other relevant key stakeholders to ensure that direct and indirect benefits are, as much as possible, retained in the islands.”

Timelapse: Watch moment 17,000 tonne rig is moved from Isle of Lewis to safer shores

This incredible footage shows the moment a 17,000-tonne oil rig which ran aground in the Outer Hebrides began its journey to safer shores.

The Transocean Winner rig has since been refloated following the incident at Dalmore Bay earlier this month.

The rig ran aground in bad weather with 280 tonnes of diesel on board and two of its four fuel tanks were damaged in the incident.

The moment is nearing for the sailaway of the recently grounded Transocean drilling rig in Scotland.

Transocean Winner rig almost ready for Hawk heavy lifter.

Following news earlier this week that therecently grounded Transocean Winner rig was waiting on weather to continue sail away preparations, work has begun to move the rig aboard the semi-submersible vessel Hawk.

In an update on Thursday, the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said work had started to lift four of the primary anchors of the Transocean Winner rig in Broad Bay, in anticipation of moving it onto the semi-submersible heavy lift and transportation vessel Hawk.

This initial work could take about 12 hours, MCA said, adding that the four secondary anchors will also be removed, also a 12 hour operation, leaving the rig attached to tugs.

After days of delays, Transocean Winner rig set to leave UK.

After weeks spent moored in Broad Bay, Scotland, the Transocean Winner semi-submersible drilling rig is finally set to depart the UK waters.

The rig had been stranded near a beach close to Carloway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland after the harsh weather blew it ashore in August. After that, the rig was towed to Broad Bay where it has been waiting on weather to be loaded aboard the semi-submersible heavy lift and transportation vessel, the Hawk.

According to an update by the Maritime and Coastguard agency on Friday, the Transocean Winner rig has been loaded onto the semi-submersible heavy lift ship. The Hawk has deballasted and the rig is now clear of the water, the MCA said. The MCA verification aircraft was on scene on Thursday and no pollution was sighted or reported.
