The Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge will close for repairs early next year after structural damage was discovered last year, City Hall announced yesterday. City Hall spokesman Mean Chanyada said: “We will close the bridge for 22 months to make repairs starting from early January 2017.”

He added that the bridge will be repaired with grant aid from Japan. The repair period was determined by experts who studied the damage to the bridge. “The working group and Phnom Penh authorities are discussing traffic after the bridge closure to avoid congestion,” Mr. Chanyada said.

In 2015, authorities temporarily closed the bridge to allow technical experts from Japan to inspect its condition because the bridge, which carries traffic east to west across the Tonle Sap River, is now about 50 years old and is showing signs of structural damage. In March, Japan agreed to provide Cambodia with a $181 million loan and aid to renovate National Road 5 linking Phnom Penh to Poipet, renovate the Chroy Changvar Bridge and to support the Cambodian Mine Action Center’s demining operations. About $33 million will be used to repair the bridge.
