PM expresses sorrow for bomb victims and their families

BANGKOK: Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said Friday night that the bomb and arson attacks in seven southern provinces which left four Thais killed and 35 other people – both Thai and foreign tourists – injured had deeply hurt the feelings of the Thai people “because there are people who bent on creating situation instead of making merits as a tribute on Mother’s Day”.

In a statement broadcast nation-wide, the prime minister expressed sorrow for families of the dead victims and for the injured, both Thais and foreigners and pledged full rehabilitation and compensation for the victims.

On the auspicious occasion of Mother’s Day, he said that Thai people should celebrate the event in happiness with their families, but instead there were incidents that caused sorrow.

But while the culprits are still at large and investigation still going on, he pleaded with members of the public not to panic by the untoward incidents but to act as “eyes and ears” of the authorities in watching out for suspicious people or objects and reporting them to the authorities.

For members of the diplomatic corps and foreigners who are living in Thailand, the prime minister announced that his government would ensure their safety and protection of their interests here.

The prime minister, Friday night led government officials and members of the public in lighting candles and expressing well wishes to Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 7th cycle birthday anniversary at Sanam Luang.

He is certainly doing a good job.

As the PM he has to keep a level head and ensure a sense of calm is installed in the population moving forward while offering any feedback or progress in the terrible events of yesterday.

What would some hope he do. Hide up North and send a few Facebook updates occasionally!

Now I get it, you keep making outlandish comments because you want to be the centre of attraction, must be hard  going through life backing losers and being ridiculed. Seriously though, don't you think you are a little old to be having a schoolboy crush?

The PM's condolences, sympathy and platitudes are all very well but his comments about ensuring tourists safety is another matter.

His track record on safety for tourists is abysmal when it comes to death and injury on buses, boats, fun parks, on the streets and footpaths and protection from ladyboys, muggers, slashers, scammers and cheats , and robbers and bash artists. So what is going to be different when it comes to protection from bombers.

He has the entire armed services and the RTP at his disposal to give tourists the protection they deserve but instead his brave soldiers and policemen are rushing about raiding soapy massage parlours and bridge clubs, checking on encroachment and doing their usual monthly rounds of collecting tea money.

I have to agree with djjamie on this! But, then again, that's what leadership is all about.

Unfortunately, for Thailand, 'real' leadership seems to have always been as elusive as bombing suspects http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/15-Erawan-bomb-suspects-at-large-as-two-appear-in--30284386.html.

You are the master of the wind up....people actually think you mean what you say.....but I can see the irony.....this place needs another joker!

No, I insist, I want no Thai authorities anywhere close to my interests.

Basically if the bombs are "politically" motivated (What aren't?) - they mean they are not by the southern separatists but are a statement against the way the government is running the "road to democracy".

In reality with the referendum, they have just tightened their grip on power and are likely to consolidate that in the ensuing election - So, one has to assume now that every time the government tightens its grip their will be a reaction by the extreme edge of those "disgruntled".

the junta on the other hand are likely to use this as an excuse to clamp down on civil liberties eve further - in the name of "harmony" which in turn is likely to  increase the resolve of those who believe that violence is the appropriate reaction.

I can see that this situation is going to rumble on or step up every time the authorities tighten their grip - looks like we're in for a long haul.

Doubt it. There were no 'counter regime' cells under past repressive regimes. Thas have a very short attention span.

that is incorrect - there have been serious anti-authority movements in the past. coups and student resistance have been quite bloody.

i think also that the current regime is different from the past - and you should be aware of why.

I think that if some opposition see chances of democracy fading they will take maters into their own hands.
