We had a saying in the military (Although Im not aware where this quote originated from):

"The main threat to security is the belief that there is no threat"

which lead on to..... walk softly but carry a big stick!

Oh my goodness... the sky might be falling!

When you are so afraid that something just might happen then the bad guys have won and you have lost.

Yeap, pretty much my sentiments.  What does the OP want, a police state?  Martial law?  The government should absolutely not overreact and create panic when the situation does not justify it.  An act of terrorism is possible anywhere in the world, but to constantly live in fear is an admission of defeat.

your best to stay in dcnx until the thais sort out all these bombings,

I've barricaded myself inside. Will come out when the war is over. I have pizza.

Since you guys clearly have reading comprehension issues, I will repeat myself. I am not living in fear, but the absolute lack of security didn't make me feel any safer, or even give the illusion they were on top of things. The lack of security looks more like a welcome mat to me.

What do I want, you ask?

I'd like to see just half as much effort put into security as they do chasing motobike riders, raiding brothels, and worrying about Pokemon. Wishful thinking, I know.

No one has issues with drunk driving police stops. Well, not unless you're a drunk. No one has a problem with airport security looking at bags. Because that's just what needs to be done. But anywhere else, checking bags that set off detectors, or randomly checking people during a heightened period is a problem? Please.

It's not about living in fear, or wanting a nanny state. It's about them making just a little effort, effort that may discourage someone from causing harm to others. Nothing is fool proof, a determined person will still get the job done, but a little effort could go a long way.

Like I said before, even 7-11 removes trash bins any time something like this happens (they returned as of last night). While that doesn't stop anyone from walking inside, it does stop someone from putting a bomb in their bin.

Ok, I'm going to build another security wall now, order another pizza, and rotate my food supply. Bye.

Who is the 'them' that you would have assigned to all the various locations? The police? The Army? Or should it be a specially-trained group of inspectors such as hired especially for the airports?

What do they look for?  Metal detectors are set to sound if metal objects go through, dangerous objects such as nail files, keys, cell phones, etc.  I don't think anyone is trying to hijack Central Festival Mall, so we can probably allow those things into the building. And as there haven't been any random terrorist shootings in Thailand, the chance of someone trying to sneak an AK-47 or an MP-5 into Kad Suan Kaew are pretty slim too.

So just what DOES a bomb look like? Is it round like a bowling ball with a fuse sticking out? Or is it a bundle of TNT sticks wrapped with tape (which wouldn't set off a metal detector anyway) inside a cake box?  More likely it's two bottles of liquid that look like Chang or Leo.... and a third smaller bottle of acid. Which high-school drop-out is going to recognize that one?

A very famous woman once said:

"Security is mostly a superstition.  Security does
not exist in nature, nor  do the children of men
as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no
safer  in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure or  nothing."

There's another saying that can be used for security in general "A locked door only keeps out an honest man." If an individual or group is knowledgeable, patient and familiar with their target, no amount of security will guarantee a safe outcome. As was stated earlier in the post, the US TSA failed 95% of the tests that were performed by a person that knew how to beat the system. If the so called "terrorist" is an idiot then there is at least a slight chance they will be caught. If the person is a pro, even excellent security will be of little help. There are things you can do to increase your personal security but sadly being in the wrong place at the wrong time is something you cannot control. Go about your daily life and do the best you can to protect yourself and your loved ones. No matter where you are in the world things beyond your control can happen at anytime.

CM108 covered a false alarm at http://www.cm108.com/bbb/topic/1073-ชาวบ้านย่านนิมมานฯ-พบวัตถุต้องสงสัย-ตรวจสอบพบเป็นกล่องเครื่องมือช่าง/.

So there is some awareness and action.

Not sure why anybody is having a go at the security staff or army.  They cannot be everywhere and there is not a lot of wiggle room for bravery when you are paid 300 baht a day or conscripted.

In NI whenever there was a blast, bomb detected, killing, riot there was a nice phrase applied and perhaps it should be considered in the totality of CM  verses where the problems occurred, or in fact the wider world that we now live in......and even for the Southern provinces where we have had 6500 deaths in the last decade and a bit........Reporting the next day would inevitably carry the phrase that "last night there was an acceptable level of violence".

CM wise we would be far better off having the BIB and Army out in numbers enforcing the laws of the land at Songkran.   This year 442 deaths and 3656 injuries in 7 days...and CM usually tops the local list.  Perspective people... a pot plant is unlikely at this stage to kill or maim in Chiang Mai any day soon.....put your money on Somchai .with no license, insurance, or registration, intoxicated and on the Superhighway in April.

They were out and doing their job. Did the fact that 6 male Farang were arrested for going shirtless go unnoticed?

The point I got from reading the original post--which probably better could have been addressed to the management at Central Festival, was: "if you're going to give the illusion that you're on top of providing a security system for the safety of people who enter the mall, do it right, or forget about it."

At least that's what I got out of it, maybe because I feel the same way.  Erecting some kind of archway with a buzzer or blinking lights for people to walk through--only if they choose to--is ridiculous at best.  It does nothing to give the illusion that safety is on the minds of the management.

In fact, it may well do the opposite.  Some people who may otherwise not ever have given a thought to doing anything destructive could, if they thought a bit about it, realize that nobody's going to pay any attention to them or do anything to deter them from nefarious deeds.  Why not give it a try?

And best (or worst) of all, only one entrance is "protected" this way; there must be upwards of a dozen other ways to enter the mall.  So remove the pseudo sense of security.  It's a pretense with nobody being fooled.

Honestly I travel a lot this year for work and security is a perception....just pray and head out....when it is time it is time. CM is relatively safe and eating at the fav restaurants of the established makes it safer ;-)
