I am unable to get automatic updates for my windows 7 laptop and I am getting an error message 8024402C.  It says I am trying to access Windows Updates using a VPN and the website and automatic update may not function properly. It said Autoproxy is not picking up the wpad.dat proxy configuration file to determine the proxy to be used for the target URL. Thus I am going with no proxy. They suggested #1. Try to access Windows updates while not using the VPN Connection and #2- Use the proxycfg tool to specify a proxy sever to use (proxycfg.exe-p <proxyserver>). They also suggested to contact your network administrator to find out the name and port of this proxy.  I have no idea what # 2 is talking about and can someone explain it in laymans terms. I am residing in a Thai apt complex and doubt very much if I would be able to ask the non english speaking thai woman in the office who the network administrator is and what the port of this proxy is, if this is relevant.

Take your laptop anywhere where they provide free wi-fi access, log on and do your Windows updates there.
