Well that's just it...none really' that's why they hand out visas like candy. Thailand is past that stage of development where the flotsam of the West are considered desirable tourists and long-term residents.

10 years working here in a genuine capacity, it's easy to stay away from the flotsam, it wasn't so easy when I lived in TL though? - Especially Pattaya.

The issue with health care and Cambodia is, as everyone here gets older, even those who are already healthy, it's normal for people's health care needs to increase. And that's where Cambodia is falling short at present.

I believe moderator Sheryl here, in other threads/posts, has indicated that there are plans for new/better hospital facilities in PP, ones that meet or come closer to meeting international standards. But I haven't seen an update lately on just what's become of those in terms of development/opening/operating.

If the Cambodians could get a better grip on their need for quality health care staff and facilities, it would go a long way toward removing the hesitations that foreigners may have about living / investing / working / staying there.

Yes, I get that. They are making it easy to go there and stay there. Good news.

My question though was what areas are worth staying in? And how do they compare to Thailand?

I like Siem Reap.

Just wonder how long is the visa holder allowed to stay per entry?

No limit as far as I am aware. The current one year visa is just that - can stay for a year, multiple entry as well.

Not even close with that statement - as regularly proved on here.

Many of those long-term residents couldn't afford the cost of a Cambodian 12 month visa.

But they can afford 800k baht bank deposits or get 60k per month per month pensions but they couldn't afford a few hundred bucks for a Cambodian   visa...I'm confused?

I'm not sure where everyone is getting this internet info fro. I live in PP and at work and home my connection is very fast.

That's great to know. Maybe I should consider moving then? Hmm...

Very true...I know people in Thailand who take regular extended trips to Phnom Penh for the express purpose of getting baked...something they wouldn't risk doing in Thailand.

Phnom Penh is an interesting place to visit and for the right person, it could be a nice place to settle down. Of course, the no farang older than 50 being allowed to marry a local girl is a bit of a downer for some (if women are your thing). The Khmer people are much more worldly and interesting to talk to than the average Thai and that alone makes a pleasant change from Thailand.

Although many things are cheap in Cambodia housing is not

When I first went to PP 15 years ago, one could buy a delapidated shop-house in the heart of today's riverfront tourist promenade for US$ 10-20k...I hear today they're 500k and up.

You think they all have the funds to show for a Thai visa??  You are well off the mark!  :cheesy:

What ISP company do you use in PP please?

Health care is available in Phnom Penh. You have to pay for it. If you can't, you are in fact left to die unlike in Thailand.

No one said "health care" isn't available in Phnom Penh.

The question is, is "quality health care" available in PP, and by various reports, the answer is, no or not much.

There is a new hospital, associated with the Bangkok Pattaya brand, the sky blue and red logo. The name is "Royal...." something, staffed with Thai doctors in addition to an American doctor and I assume some Cambodian. I'm not here to argue about it, just making the point you can find quality health care in Phnom Penh if you can pay. If it's something serious, and whatever, go ahead, go to Bangkok. I'd question the level of care in Bangkok far exceeds that available in Phnom Penh for those with money. Most I personally know go to Singapore or Hong Kong for "serious" ailments. So with all that said, move back to England for all I care. Cheers mate and O O.

That Royal Phnom Penh Hospital,  on the way to town from the airport, looks nice from the outside but has limited facilities and medical specialists compared to even a major provicial hospital in Thailand.

Not sure why I'd do that, since I'm NOT English.

But that aside, it sounds like this is the new hospital you were referring to:

Perhaps this is one of the international-caliber medical facilities for PP that Sheryl had said was coming...

Sorry...I assumed you were English. I'd just seen an English chap drunk insulting a Thai. Nothing personal.

I didn't post the web site because I didn't think that was allowed?

I have since looked up the American doctor and he is in fact a long time practicing M.D. from Durham North Carolina. What was odd is the web site is not fully functional. There is an indication said hospital has an MRI machine so it's somewhat modern I suppose. There is some confusion on this and other forums about medical care in SEA. It remains a business, much like education. If you have the money, you can get good care(and good education for your children). If you don't have money, and are a foreigner here leaching off the infra structure, well good luck getting that heart operation or proper anything. Why should Thailand or Cambodia finance deadbeat farangs/barangs?

It reads as if these VISA's are only available to Japanese citizens. What's the real deal?

It does read like that but that would be kinda silly and other reports i have read have sounded different. It's probably just mangled translating or bad reporting. We can just wait a couple weeks until the new visas are supposed to be available to see exactly what will be on offer.

I'd like to get a one year multiple, but I'm not really interested at this time in spending a week in Phnom Penh waiting for an agent to get it, "worrying" about my passport etc.. Getting it on arrival at the airport would be super duper for my needs. O O
