Can anybody tell me what a single entry non immigrant o 1 year visa is all about, how long can you stay in Thailand using this visa and why would someone only require a single entry , sorry for my ignorance on this someone please enlighten me.

There is no such visa. But there is a single entry non immigrant O-A visa issued for long stay (retirement) that provides a one year permitted to stay stamp when you enter Thailand. In effect it is a pre approved extension of stay for those over age 50 and meeting the financial requirements that is done in there home country.

After the one year you either leave or extend your stay at immigration.
