Currently I am in the UK on holiday from Thailand. I will arrive back in Thailand on the 1st September and my retirement visa expires on the 2nd September.Does that mean I have to apply for some sort of visa before I depart from the UK. I am fairly sure that I will be allowed back in Thailand but as my visa expires one day later does that mean I will only get a 30 day visa and will that allow me to apply for another retirement visa, I have been told that I may not be able to do this on a 30day visa. My other options as far as I know are: Applying for a 12 month multiple re-entry visa (based on my UK pension statement) from the Hull Consulate, but that involves 90 day trips to Myanmar, or I can apply for a 60 day tourist visa. I do plan to return to the UK for about 2 weeks in the middle of October and then return to Thailand around the 22nd October. Help would be very much appreciated with this-thanks in advance.

If you have a 1 year extension of stay granted by immigration (not a visa), and a re-entry permit that was bought before leaving Thailand and is valid until September 2nd, you can re-enter on September 1st and be given permission to stay until the 2nd. You would need to go to immigration on September 2nd at the latest to apply for another years extension.

Otherwise you need to get a new Non Immigrant visa in the UK and start the extension process again when back in Thailand. Alternatively you could enter using visa exempt entry or a tourist visa and apply for a conversion/extension in the country. If you travel without a visa the airline might not let you board unless you can show an onward flight out of Thailand within 30 days.

If you are in receipt of state pension you would have no problem getting a non 'O' visa in the UK. If you're living here it's best to get a single entry non 'O' followed by an extension of stay. You can still leave the country but need a re-entry permit to keep your permission to stay alive. A single entry reentry permit is 1,900 baht.

You could enter on the 1st of September and get a permit to stay until the 2nd from your re-entry and then apply on the 1st (if early enough) or 2nd for your extension if you are prepared to do it when you arrive.

You could apply for a single entry non-o visa instead of the multiple entry visa if you are 65 or over and getting an old age pension.

Thanks for your help. I will not have time to apply for a new extension as I will not arrive back in Chiang Mai until late on the 2nd September. So now I need to know if immigration will issue me with a 30 day visa on arrival (and weather or not I can apply for a Retirement extension of stay while I am on a 30 day visa) and if not I may have to apply for a Non O Retirement visa based on UK pension in Hull and convert later in Thailand to a Non O where I only have to do 90 day reporting and not 90 day cross border runs.

Assuming I get the 12 month retirement Non O in Hull and do the border runs every 90 days does that mean I can extend the 12 months by about 90 days by doing a border run just before my 12 months expires (something which I believe you can't do with a 12 month Non O aqquired in Thailand.

  • Yes you would get a 30 day visa exempt entry on arrival. Note my comment about the airline.
  • Yes you can convert that entry to a non 'O' visa/entry at immigration. I believe CM want at least 21 days left of the 30 when you apply. If necessary the 30 day permit to stay can be extended by another 30 days.
  • If you have time it would be better to get a single entry non 'O' from Hull. It wouldn't need converting once you're in Thailand. You get 90 days on entry and can apply for an extension of stay at CM within the last 30/45 days.
  • Yes, if you get a multiple entry non 'O' and enter just before it expires you get a final 90 day stay. This gives you almost 15 months but requires border runs.
