Best KK hospital

Can anyone advise on the best KK Government hospital for an eye examination?

Sinagarind KK university hospital has a comprehensive eye department.

 

However you will have an awful lot of form filling first and possibly wait a very long time to actually see the specialist.

 

Well meaning staff and the bill will be minimal but the place is absolutely jam packed Issan style, no air con in waiting areas and lucky to get a seat....... .

 

The ER department is a much easier option at this hospital.

 

Alternative is Bangkok hospital in KK, obviously this is an expensive place, however I had a health check their on a promotion price

and the eye check part was very in depth and professional and probably waited 15 mins in air con comfort to see the doctor who was superb and spoke excellent English and provided a full report.

 

Worth popping in or calling Bkk  hospital to ask them how much an initial eye check would be? may not be too bad.

 

If you just want a check for  prescription glasses or contacts or obvious defects you can usually get that for free at many of the Charoen opticians around town .......you know the shops with the girls in tight white uniforms, new well equipt branch one floor up directly above the banks in Central plaza.

Dr.  Chavakij Bhoomibunchoo and the rest of the medical staff in the eye department at KK Srinakarind hospital are excellent and best in all the NE region. You can visit him or the other doctors at the night clinic I believe, but there is some registration to do, and if you don't speak Thai you would be best taking someone with you who does.

Didn't know their was a night clinic, daytime the whole outpatients area resembles a crowd scene form Gandhi!

 

Doctors at KK work at the private hospitals as well so your first hand experience is I am sure a good recommendation.

Yeah, actually the night clinic in the eye department works smoothly. They have their own segregated area on the first floor. You do have to register at the main desk, and do the check in, weigh in, blood pressure etc., at the outside nursing station, but then when you enter the night clinic eye department they are pretty efficient. They have all the equipment there, and specialists for different conditions. Dr. Chavakid is a retina specialist and does retina detachments, cataracts, and things like that. Again, take a Thai person with you if you are not fluent, because there are a lot of hoops to jump through, but easy once you do it.

There are qualified eye doctors with private clinics in Khon Kaen.

Thank you all for your help.

I do need a hospital check up as vision is blurred in one eye. Hopefully it is cataract related rather than macular damage. The evening eye clinic seems to be the answer.

Top Charoen are ok if you are short/long sighted and need basic glasses but that is all. They have very limited testing capabilities and not even the neccesary light boxes. They had never heard of prism lenses!

The evening clinic is Thursday.  Starts about 4:30PM.

 

If you are already registered at the hospital, you can go to the newer tall building just to the South of the main entrance and get a number for the clinic.  They start giving out numbers in the morning.

As you enter through the doors from the circular drive, go to the desk to the left as you enter, and tell them you want to go to the evening eye clinic.

 

If you're not yet registered at the hospital, you'll have to do that first.  You might have to do that during the day.  

Go to the main entrance.  Once inside there is an information desk/office.  They can tell you where to go.  

But, as mentioned, you'll probably need a Thai speaker for most stuff - but probably not for the doctors.

That's a set back. Thought the clinic was daily and was going to KK in the morning. about a 3 hour drive but have to do a 90day thingy at immigration. Will postpone and go to the hospital Wed. and see what is the best way forward (provided I haven't gone blind by then!)

You can do your 90 day report by mail at KK if you weren't sure somo mate.

You might check to see if there are other evenings for the eye clinic.  

I said Thursday because that's the day I usually go.

That might just be the day the doctor I use works.  She has clinics on Thursday, and does surgeries on Friday.  Other eye doctors might have different schedules.

Have set it up to go and stay for a few days as from Wed. and sort things out. 

I think I am too late for a postal 90 day report but it has given me an idea. Suppose I turn up with my application in an envelope and just hand it in and ask they post the acceptance to my home. Would that save me 3 or 4 hours hanging around at immigration when I could instead be hanging around at the hospital which I think is just opposite the offices?

Thought an update might be useful for anyone with eye problems.

Got there about 1pm and with a minimum of paperwork got a ticket for the evening clinic which starts at 4.30. 

Spent about 3 hours being examined with all the latest technology and they found the problem. I will need an operation which is scheduled for early Oct. The cost of this session was 2,500 Baht. The operation involves sticking the macula back on + they will insert a new lense ie cataract surgery whilst they are at it. Cost will be 60-70k including 1 night in private room where my wife can also stay.

The clinic is open 6 days/week closed Sunday.

The head surgeon is there on Wed. only so I was just lucky to see him straight away.

All in all I was most impressed. Walking in off the street to having a detailed discussion with a surgeon and a date set all within a few hours would never happen back home in the UK. He spoke almost perfect English and has done lots of these operations so I feel ok about it.

I should add that the room and cataract surgery bit are optional extras for me. Without them the cost would probably be halved.
