Public Health Ministry assures Zika situation not as bad as deemed by EU

BANGKOK, 1 September 2016 (NNT) – The Minister of Public Health has assured that the spread of the Zika virus in Thailand is not as severe as characterized by a European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control report, urging citizens not to panic as the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has the situation under control.

Minister of Public Health Dr. Piyasakol Sakolsathayathorn has chaired the sixth meeting of the National Communicable Disease Commission, which focused its discussions on the outbreak of Zika virus. The minister stated to the commission that the Zika virus is common to Thailand and can be found annually in several patients, asserting that it can be limited and should not be a cause for concern.

Responding to a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Dr. Piyasakol said infections of Zika have only been found in Chantaburi, Petchabun, Bueng Kan and Chiang Mai with most patients already past a 28 day monitoring period and a general warning already lifted.

Addressing a jump in influenza patients, the minister assured the rate is only a seasonal increase before stating that authorities have turned their attention to protecting Hajj pilgrims from contracting Middle East Respiratory Syndrome while in Saudi Arabia.

Of course ZIKA is not that bad here in Thailand. Does the EU not know how much

Thailand relies on tourism for foreign currency and driving our economy. If they

did surely they would agree with us so as not to scare tourists away. :P

Being at a meeting with these bell ends must be like being back at school.

'PSSSSST Many countries around the world are warning of the Zika virus, lets tell people its not a problem here and they will all come'

OOOOH what a good idea. We deserve a bonus for getting another 500 million people on the planes to Thailand.

Westerners( and other thinking people )take assurances from a military government that also "" assures"" all is normal after multi able bomb attacks ((and no culprits captured, ) with very little confidence.

Ignoring a world health body to believe a third world junta is ludicrous in the extreme.

Violence against westerners, growing xenophobic sentiment, assaults , deaths, bombings , safety lapses , carnage on sea and road , unsuitable requirements in medical care and now Zika make tourism there risky.

This is with. Civil unrest brewing also.

Insurance companies are simply raising the costs of cover and in some cases refusing under junta law clauses.

Go elsewhere folks....stay safe.

The hospitals could be filling with people and under suppression laws not allowed to reveal the extent this virus has caught hold there.

Take the world body advice.

Stay away

Right!...not as bad....definitely a lot worse!!!

Singapore is struggling with Zika and yet  is diligent in the fight and transparent in reporting. Neither of those characteristics seem available in Thailand

Yes sir , you make an important differential between the two Nations.

One is not in denial and diligent in its efforts.

Thailand we are learning is trying to conceal the outbreaks and rapid transmission rates.

Please also note ...it's rainy season in Thailand now and mosquito lava is flourishing in the prefect conditions ...infect rates are running away and warnings shouldn't be ignored .

Families should not travel there and young woman until authorities from world health bodies assure you.

Do not listen to junta representatives
