Why are there so many indian sellers at hway khwang night market

This is what happens. I just go into any random eatery at hway khwang night market the time is say past midnight maybe 1am. You see some indian looking person walking up to you his basket is full of well i don't know herbs/spices/nuts etc and one of them even touches me asking me to buy whatever crap is inside there. I say no some are quite persistent then he leaves and approaches some other patron. He isn't the only one. It repeats itself 5-6 more times. Some of them don't even speak thai. I encountered this a few times and once i had 3 approach me one after the other and touching me *yucks*. Anyway the last one a few didn't approach me so i am thankful saw an indian/farang looking thai obviously a leuk kreung get it pretty hard from one of the indian sellers who was probably banking on the same race so help me card and annoyed him to no end cos he kept on declining but the damn seller was so persistent.

Just curious why do these indian sellers only show up at hway khwang cos i don't encounter them elsewhere certainly not in the silom/pat pong area. Why do they sell the same type of crap. You know spices/nuts/crap most ppl wouldn't want.

I consider grabbing my arms to be very rude so my reply will also be very rude. Indians just are very rude people, especially the lower class streetvendors but also the very rich ones.

They do the same in Hongkong and it's very hard to get rid of them.

I sympathize with them to a certain extent, but then they spoil it all by their general irritating behavior.

I feel for them because it costs a lot of money to be able to get to Thailand where they can sell nuts etc for a miserable profit. 10 years ago, it cost 15,000 rupees (a lot of money to them) to join the caravan of Indians coming to Thailand to get menial, low paying jobs. But they felt it was worth it. Here, they would be bundled into one room - 10 sleeping together in a doss house out in the sticks of Samut Prakan. It was a miserable existence, but as one guy told me, there was no work at home and he had a family to feed. Very hard to criticize someone for taking such a risk to look after their family. But this guy spoiled it all by refusing to understand that he could not keep pestering people to buy his goods. I patiently explained to him that his customers are primarily white guys who don't like their personal space violated without permission. "No" means "no" - accept it and move on. I asked him if he understood what I was saying, and he said yes. But still he wouldn't stop with the touching and grabbing and relentless whining, so in the end I had to threaten him to stay away. There is a limit. Bloody sad, really. Bloke only wants to feed his family, but then spoils it for himself.

Wait so you had a conversation with him and he told you all that? Obviously he would want you to buy something also you mean most white guys buy from them? Actually if that was the case it could do us all a favor and they only target the white guys.  Freaking irritating these clowns

^^^ - Yes, he told me all this -- over several months. You see, I'm a bit of a slut and will talk to anyone who shows an interest in me - even peanut sellers.

(Sorry about the "white guy" reference - was only coining a phrase, so to speak. When I next see my Indian peanut seller, I'll remind him to pester black guys as well in the interests of equality and fraternity. :))

Firstly, why Huay Kwang? Obviously because of the fact of cheap housing in the area (largest area of govt public housing in BKK aside from the new estates out at Miniburi) and due to the night markets and late night restaurants in the area. The product does sell in these areas even if the demand is low.

Secondly, not all of these guys are Indian, some of from Burma, and some are considered technically stateless. Some of them have food carts in Ratchada sois 10, 13 and 17 to name a few.

They are just trying to make a living as all people selling food do.

As opposed to taxi drivers, sales people, tourist operators, etc. All sales people pester potential consumers. Given the amount of "pestering" that goes on in Thailand these guys shouldn't worry you that much.

A simple, clear no thanks usually suffices. Compared to all the other crap one has to deal with these guys are usually on the lower end of the scale.

seeing you did not get sanctioned over this i shall put one on top.

ever been to fiji? suffered the impertinence of the local indian population - dumped there by the brits a 100 years ago?

dealing with them is like dealing with deaf - mute glue. no matter how many times you say 'NO',you still get taken to their sister's husband's cousin's daughter's souvenir shop to be offered 'authentic polynesian necklaces', (made in mumbay), at the best price in town.

in oz there would be very few petrol service stations left - not operated and staffed by citizens of the sub - continent. and i just totally hate their call centre services where they pretend to be julian smith from perth when their real name is prakash mirchandani and they sit in some hell - hole somewhere in ... or something.

i love being here in thailand because i do not have to deal with 'them'. was that a step too far?

read quick, i might get deleted.

Gotta admire that about many Asians.  They don't give a rat's ass how much they irritate you.  They want to make the sale.

A lot like high pressure insurance, used car and financial services salesmen back home.  They're relentless.  And it obviously works often enough to keep them doing it.

But admiration for their persistence isn't the same as liking it...

I suspect they're actually Thai citizens of Indian ancestry and not fresh off of any airplane.  Like the tailors on Suk.

I understand fiji was about to get taken over by the indians but the fijians retaliated and threw them out. Good for them.

You must be kidding when you say no thanks chases them away when in this very thread we have people speaking of having their arms grabbed at and i got touched by one of them. They approach you when you're eating half way which is the most vulnerable time obviously.

no, they did not. there was a military coup that was widely condemned by westerners but it really did not change anything.
