After a weekend of meetings, unions decided to propose $179.60 per month as the new minimum wage for 2017 and will submit their request today to the Labor Ministry ahead of trilateral negotiations on Friday. The unions said they based the figure on the social and economic situation in Cambodia and worked with the American Center For International Labor Solidarity (ACILS), global union IndustriALL and the FES organization.

Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW), told Khmer Times yesterday that the union studied how workers spend their money and other factors that contributed to the financial success, and failings, of many within their union. “We have references which we based this on to decide the figure and we received approval from the other unions on this figure as well. We think this is the first time in the country’s history that all of the unions have agreed to take one decision and one figure to negotiate with employers,” he said.

He was unsure of whether the employers would accept the figure and did not want to speculate ahead of the negotiations. The first tripartite negotiations – with the Labor Ministry and employers – will be held on Friday and the second round will be held on September 12. A third will take place on September 26.
