Considering a move to Chaing Rai. According to Wiki only has one public hospital.

  • Prachanukhro Hospital Public hospital.

Anyone have any experience there? Is it a decent hospital? Are their charges reasonable or do they have farang rates?

There is only the one public hospital but there are two private hospitals, Overbrook and Kasemrad Sriburin.  There are several smaller community hospitals scattered around the region for minor issues.  For more specialized treatment it might me necessary to visit Chiang Mai or Bangkok.  Though I have visited people at our three hospitals, personally I have had very limited experience so can't really comment on price.

I found Kasemrad Sriburin service to be exceptional when I took a sick friend there this year.

Consultation, chest Xray and 3 prescriptions were 1300B.

The main public hospital is a very very busy place that attracts a lot of the less well off locals who can't or won't pay the private hospital prices.  My limited experience at the public hospital was good to very good on two different times......farangs used to be a fairly rare sight there but I haven't been in years.  The prices were certainly dirt cheap and though the lines were long the service i got was just fine.....they have just recently completed a very large new addition but i haven't been into it as yet.  I think overall for relatively minor problems and if you don't mind some long waits it would be ok.

I think that the waiting time would be an issue with many farang; I forgot to mention in my earlier post that the full process, including waiting, took almost exactly one hour.

Personally, I'm ok with basic medical care at CRs hospitals. I've been to all three with one family member or another. Sriburin seems to be the most modern and very little waiting. Overbrook is ok if you can find a place to park. And I've heard that Mae Fah Luang U is developing a new med school that may lead to more care choices in the future.

But I'm currently in Chiang Mai for some dental surgery. There are more choices here and I found a dental clinic I like. While here, my wife wanted to check out a knee problem. We were going to CM Ram where we have been before. But after talking to a friend here and to my dentist we changed her appointment to the new Bangkok Hospital. Quite an impressive place with all the gadgets and gizmos. Of course, a bit more expensive but still cheaper than most western countries. And it's really an easy drive over the hills to get here with the added bonus of a chance to do some shopping and restaurant exploring.

It's all up to your personal expectations and insurance plan. But for non-emergency surgery or any advanced care I'm quite satisfied with Chiang Mai.  And I hope the medial care options in CR continue to expand in the future.

Personally, I look for the best doctor in the area of specialism that I need, then I go see that person where ever they happen to work, I think that's a far better strategy than getting emotionally attached to a particular building and hoping.

have been a patient at both private hosps and visited the public; unless you dont have an extra dollar, avoid the public; dirty, overworked staff, family members staying there, overcrowded;

sriburin have been in both in and out patient ; recommended over Overbrook;  much better admit process and seems top equipment (they have their own MRI onsite); at Sriburin got a private room (5 days) right away EVEN THO they are under construction right now with one of their big wings; it was not a problem; ER doctor and 'regular' doctor good english; their doctors respond positively to questions , which a lot of thai doctors DO NOT LIKE; they DID radically over-prescribe the meds on discharge tho

I also prefer Sriburin to Overbrook mainly on the facilities and low waiting times. I found a doctor I liked at Sriburin just to help monitor my high blood pressure. I liked him because he agreed with me to avoid meds as long as possible. He was also in the new wing that is quite nice. I look forward to seeing how the renovations turn out in the old building.

Recently took mother-in-law to Overbrook for an MRI. The level of care seems fine even though the facilities are getting old. But I'm also looking for a dermatologist to look at some mystery spots on my skin. Sriburin has an "aesthetic" skin clinic to laser away wrinkles, but not an actual MD dermatologist. Overbrook has one though so I may give them a try. I know CM has good dermatologists, but I'm getting tired of the drive if it's not really necessary.

I like the nurses at Kasemrad Sriburin all white and bright. Our son was born in this hospital; he is still with us 12 years down the track. My major dental work I had here is still chomping since 2006. Prices still cheaper than Bangkok and most trained in America.

Busy place the public hospital on the weekends due to road trauma victims.
