Accidents and crime Phuket’s biggest tourism threats

PHUKET: -- Despite fears of terrorism, natural disasters and health pandemics, government officials rate everyday crime and road accidents as the greatest dangers to Phuket’s tourism industry, a Phuket Provincial Tourism Management Strategy (PPTRMS) workshop revealed on Tuesday.

During the workshop, at the Royal Phuket City Hotel, government officials were presented with the results of a survey from the previous workshop, held on August 22, when attendees were divided into four groups.

Each group was asked to collectively assign a “likelihood” and “consequence” ratings of 1, 2 or 3 to 12 potential threats, with the total “level of risk” calculated as the product of the two ratings.

The overall results found that “crime” had the highest overall risk level (7) on average, followed by “road accidents” (6).

Other potential threats were rated as follows: [more...]

Not included in the overall results, however, was the threat to tourism posed by “migrant labor”, which was assessed by only one of the four groups. This group felt that migrant labor posed the greatest danger to Phuket’s tourism, with a likelihood rating of 3 and a consequence rating of 3, for a combined “level of risk” of 9.

can someone explain how migrant labor poses more of a threat to tourism than anything else.

Great isn't it, a shortage of labour in Phuket, the Burmese are doing all the mundane work and the authorities are worried about illegal immigrants..

I believe that those two points reflect the major threats to tourism everywhere in Thailand, not just Phuket. It's a shame because both elements could be managed.

Oh so simple! Let me Let me!!!!

The migrant workersare cheap labor, cheaper than the local Thai's. They come over and work very hard, and are treated badly, crammed into trucks and driven all over Phuket. All the while, they see the falangs, having vacations, blowing money, and getting drunk. They have no loyalty to Phuket, and they are sick of seeing falangs having such fun. They have a few beers after work, and suddenly, feeling bulletproof, they stalk a unsuspecting falang with bulging pockets, and gank his ass for his goods. These people are poor and are willing to risk trouble to rob a tourist. For Blake's Sake... I would. If I was in there shoes, you can ###### sure bet I would kick the s*&t out of you and take your money.

I am from Texas. Mexicans are used in similiar ways. Violence is through the roof.

Thus endth the lesson.

The migrant laborers here aren't petty criminals.

Actually there is very little petty crime here compared to the USA.

For the most part the migrant workers are just grateful to be here and have jobs. They aren't robbers and muggers.

If they were we'd be seeing a crime wave that would be unimaginable.

The BIB stomp them hard when they do.

Here we don't have every negro or mexican on a street corner with a video camera.

Who you have to watch for are the shady BGs and LBs late at night if you're drunk and wandering around. The chances of getting "rolled" are pretty good(why would I know that?). But that would be the same anywhere in the world!

Occasionally there will be a rash of burglaries in the Chalong area but again IMHE the BIB are on them like flies on you know what!
