Thailand pledges support for ASEAN-Japan economic partnership

  

VIENTIANE, 8 September 2016 (NNT) – Thailand has pledged support for Japan’s role on the development of high-quality infrastructure to improve connectivity within the ASEAN region, the Prime Minister has said during the ASEAN-Japan summit. 

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has attended the 19th ASEAN-Japan Summit, held as part of the ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, which was participated by ASEAN leaders and the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, discussing both parties' friendly partnership and relations, as well as the 10-year economic cooperation strategy. 

During this meeting, Thailand praised Japan’s role of encouraging economic cooperation in the region by creating growth, reducing development gap, stimulating employment, and Japan's support of sustainable development. 

The Prime Minister expressed its will to support Japanese businesses to expand trade and investment, especially on the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), green technology, digital industry, automobile industry, and agricultural industry. 

Thailand has pledged to support Japan’s role of leading the development of high-quality infrastructure in Asia which will help improve connectivity within the region, and called for Japan to play a greater role in the master plan for ASEAN Connectivity 2025. The plan envisions the region's progress towards establishing seamless infrastructure of connectivity, to solidify the region's vision as a true economic corridor. 

Thailand has also expressed its belief towards Japan’s active peacekeeping policy to help support the strength of the region with ASEAN as the center, and promote the unity of the region in the future. 

After the meeting, the Prime Minister of Thailand has joined a luncheon hosted by Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, the current ASEAN President of 2016, to honour all heads of state and government leaders attending the ASEAN Summit.

And in return Thailand has pledged support to China's sovereignty over the China South Sea that includes Japan's claim to the Spratly Islands.

Time for Japan to rethink its investments in Thailand.
