PM pledges support for US rebalancing strategy

VIENTIANE, 9 September 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister expresses support to the US’ re-balancing strategy at the ASEAN-US Summit, and is prepared to extend the cooperative framework into a strategic partnership.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha and other ASEAN leaders today met with the US President Barack Obama in the 4th ASEAN-US Summit held in the National Convention Center in Vientiane, Laos.

The US President gave an opening speech greeting all the ASEAN leaders, saying he had already met with ASEAN leaders for 8 times, more than any other US President in history, reflecting the importance of the region towards the US’ re-balancing strategy dubbed Asia-Pivot. According to President Obama, the ASEAN region plays a crucial role to regional and global security.

He said the US highly prioritizes on ASEAN, and intends to build a strong foundation of relations in the region in keeping with the contents of the Sunnylands Declaration, made jointly by ASEAN leaders and the US President during a special ASEAN-US Summit earlier this year.

Thai Government Spokesman Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak revealed after the conference that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his appreciation to the US President for the re-balancing strategy to this region, and his continued attendance to the numerous ASEAN Summits.

The Prime Minister wished that the US will provide support for the development of ASEAN countries in scientific, technological, and innovative aspects, and to expedite the establishment of the US-ASEAN Connect Center in Bangkok to expand cooperation in energy though US agencies.

At this conference, Thailand stated that cooperation on combating all forms of terrorism was a priority, including the enhancement of cyber security, response to climate change and natural disaster to include advancing alert and post-disaster renovation works, and on water management. Thailand also shows its support to the reinforcement of maritime security, and urged the use of peaceful methods to solve maritime issues.

The Prime Minister then gave well-wishes message to the US President to have happiness and success for the rest of his term, thanked the US for its continued cooperation with ASEAN, and the effort to establish a foundation of cooperation as a strategic partner, which will help deepen the relations of both sides.

This comes hot on the heels of a junta spokesman saying LoS supported China throwing its weight around, sorry ' Peace ' efforts in the Sth. China Sea.

Is this a Thai balancing rather than re-balancing act ?

Playing one off against the other and he'll probably get away with it AGAIN, demonstrating what p!ss poor leadership we have in the west.

This is being everybody's ally and nobody's friend, or extreme Thainess.  It is just a glaring example of the inbred mentality of those running the country.

I thought they called Article 44 and "executive order" in the US :D

Bit of a difference in the way the "executive " is selected, overseen and held to account though isn't there!

I bet that's a relief to the POTUS, such an endorsement will no doubt ensure success in this venture.

Just politics - let's not get too excited. All politicians do it. What is said for public consumption may not bear any resemblance to what is going on privately. Politicians are like snakes - have a forked tongue :gigglem:

Mind you, I also think some politicians are "forked" in the head also.

He then presented Obama with a new trackable sim card: "You need this when you come to Thailand 'to expedite the establishment of the US-ASEAN Connect Center in Bangkok'. And don't wear a bikini, because then you are asking for it."

Meaningless pledge for USA which Obama probably nod but not impressed. Thailand really contribute nothing in terms of infrastructures for US rebalancing strategy since US Airforce pulled out from Thailand after the Vietnam war. Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia have physical infrastructures that support the US Air Force and the 7 Fleet and are more important for USA pivot towards Asia especially against the President Xi Jinping aggressive moves to exert more influence in the Asia Pacific region.

good call, never thought of it this way but i think you are right. the good general needs to rename article 44 to something more catchy. lightening rod or the definitive answer maybe would be more user friendly.

He has AA so how about PP -

Prayut's Perogative ?

More a case of Thailand needs USA more.

I wonder if it is more the case of foreign multi-nationals using Thailand's cheap labour then exporting to the US.

How much of that $26.2 billion goes to Samsung, Western Digital, Toyota, Ford, ect. and straight out of Thailand with minimal tax thanks to the BOI incentives?

Not sure if Thailand really needs the USA or whether they realize that it is better to not be against the USA.

Why do they have to be against anybody?  Work with China, the US, the EU.  It's all good for the country.
