A university freshman who was earlier reported to be in coma from lung infection after being forced to swim in waste water treatment pond has regained consciousness and is free from infection.

Meanwhile, dean of the International Commercial Maritime Faculty of Kasetsart University’s Si Racha campus, in Chon Buri, Professor Nirut Hongprasit told the media on Monday that the victim, Chokechai Thongnuakhao or Boss, was not forced to swim in the pond and the water in the pond is not waste water as mistakenly reported in the social and mainstream media, but a pond that is used to contain rain water.

He denied that there was a hazing activity, but the victim together with his classmates were taken to the pond to wash themselves after having finished a group’s activity at a soft ball field.

From the OP

''After the first post, more messages were posted in the social media, apparently, by the victim’s classmates who went through similar ordeal. One claimed that the pond was used to treat chemical wastes.''

Think I'll take the word of those forced to go through this hazing rather than that of the management trying to cover up what happened.

In response to private message but worth posting here...

Q1:  The pond in that video is not the same pond.  It looks like Sattahip where the Thai military does some of the cadet training.

This link shows cadets swimming in the pond in question.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mvyGoFMkq4

Q2:  I can't say exactly why a student mentioned chemical wastes.  It isn't correct though.  As the building next to this pond is part of the science faculty including the chemistry classrooms it seems someone speculated that the drains in the labs might empty into this pond.  The university reported they were also testing the water to know if there is anything toxic.

Q3:  The reported 'waste treatment' devices in the water mentioned is not confirmation that this is a waste treatment pond.  There are 'splashing' devices present but they are not used.  This pond is next to the fabrication building and used for testing students' design projects...

You do realise I was being critical of hazing and outlining the mentality of the thugs behind them, of don't you...

Indeed, I was trying to emphasise your point.

There is life for those that do not want to be hazed.
The U Y was aimed at hazers, not at all at you.
My apologies if it comes across differently.

Note to self: do not post late at night. ;-)

So make someone swim in dirty water is assault these days?

Never been in the army I guess.

PC reaching never seen levels, only on Thaivisa.

Army training is one thing, as it is always controlled by responsible persons of higher rank holding answerable positions of trust. Bullying is always done by irresponsible persons who answer to no one but themselves with no consideration for their victims. Realise this  Anthony and then you might be able to understand the difference.

From the info in post #2 is clear that this was a training. Do they in the army training ask you if you PLEASE want to go in the water?

It is well known that Thais in authority will "shoot from the hip"  and say just about

anything without thought , to cover up their mistakes.

As a kid I learned to patronise the brutes so well that I was rarely bullied or got into fights - and it was a tough neighbourhood. There's something to be said for Stockholm syndrome. If you challenge their machismo you'll only get keel-hauled - don't know if that's what happened here.

But, but you said just minutes ago " Army training is one thing, as it is always controlled by responsible persons of higher rank holding answerable positions of trust. "
