BANGKOK: -- Three Thai airlines have separately announced the ban of the use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones on board their airlines and in storing the phones in their check-in luggage.

The ban followed announcement by manufacturer Samsung to recall all its Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones after it was reported that a smartphone exploded during and after recharging.

Thai Airways International’s director for safety Prathana Pattanasiri said that, for the sake of all passengers, the airline would like to ask for cooperation from all passengers not to switch on or to recharge their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones while on board a plane.

if they are all being recalled then a total ban on the device should be in place, and for those that are too lazy to return them they should be rendered useless with a firmware update by Samsung to ensure they are all returned otherwise how is anyone going to be able to tell a good re-released device from a suspect one

It has to be said, bound to be some cabin staff v passenger confrontations and I'll bet some ' VIP ' passengers won't even be approached.

No there won't as it is clearly stated that  note 7 phone is not allowed in the cabin it must be switched off and put into hold luggage. And all pas angers are treated the same.

Are they really ?

How is this so different to how LoS usually operates when dealing with a somebody and a lesser being ?

I often wondered why the staff on aeroplanes never insist on phones being switched off.

They may know the truth: that cellphones pose no threat to aircraft navigation.

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-29381193: "The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) says electronic devices such as mobile phones can be left switched on during flights. EASA says that electronic devices do not pose a safety risk."

If the phone really is a fire hazard, I would much rather it be in carry-on, where one might see the fire start in time to do something about it, as opposed to checked luggage where it won't be noticed until it is far too late.

too late if there is an explosion in the cabin. the best solution is ban on the devise in the planes completely.

Well personaly I've never met a so called leeser being in real life. But you seem to have experiance on that one

And have you ever seen or heard of a somebody getting preferential treatment ? Plenty of examples in the news .

By the way it's Personally, Lesser and Experience. In too much of a rush to try and bite back ?

Thais aren't big on obeying signs so do you honestly think a passenger who is or thinks he / she is important will pay any attention or put the Note 7 into check in baggage because a security officer asks them to.

In the cabin it's likely to be smiles as the crew can't or won't say anything.

In fact the story says the complete opposite.  Not put in check-in baggage.
