BANGKOK: -- The set of old trains that are free for anyone to ride will receive a major makeover, the State Railway of Thailand announced yesterday, as the organization celebrates its 120th anniversary this year.

The 164 third-class cars will be repainted. The seats and fans will be improved to guarantee maximum comfort, and a “big cleaning” is expected to fix issues like dirty toilets, unpleasant smells, and the overwhelming amount of dust that can actually give you a red eye.

We used this service last year from Hualampong to Chachangsaeo . Best Beloved went free, I paid,  Little Miss JAG, who is Thai but looks European had to pay too! (Or rather I paid for her!)

I paid 4 years ago 200 b from udon thani to Bangkok and Mrs 0 baht .

If they have money for this, why don't they use the money to maintain and keep them in better shape in the first place.

Without the dirty toilets, unpleasant smells, and the overwhelming amount of dust that can give you a red eye it just won't have the same appeal.

120 year old? Is that the age of trains? In the modern world who uses fans on public transport in a hot country? If they were comfortable, clean, air conditioned and modern more people would use them and then they could charge a reasonable price. We travelled to Maha Chai/Samut Sakhon; the toilets stunk, the heat was unbearable and Maha Chai station was very dirty and over run with rats. Needless to say we only took the train once and the 10 baht fare was not an incentive!

So how much exactly does the free ride cost???

About 30 years late. Get a grip SRT

That old section of SRT is isolated and not part of the mainline system in Thailand. You took the ride as an outing, many use it as a daily necessity and being Thai they endure the heat and discomfort stoicly. There is a large fish and produce market at Mahachai thus a resident rat population which the Thais seem to accept.

I am sure you are aware that the State Railway of Thailand is only celebrating a 120th anniversary of innauguration. The trains and locomotives are less than 50 years old on average.
