That's a good one although you need to save and zoom in to read all the text.

It is surprisingly complete and clear.

It answers many of the ever recurring DL questions in the motor forum.

Unfortunately an interesting piece of text about "eyes" is incomplete.

One of the last mysteries is still unresolved for me: what to do if one fails the color blindness test?

I have a mate with this problem.

There is vague hope that you can get  around with a special medical exam/certificate to be fit to drive?

If someone visits the Pattaya (Chonburi) DLT it would great to have another picture taken.

Point 1 on top of the the list:

Wear polite clothes

Your first Thai license now is a temporary 2 year license

Yep, but it's a right ballache ...I did this year as couldn't convert my paper license from UK ....10 hours and 15 minutes later and done. So if there is an option not to have the life sucked out of you for an entire day then well ....

And what would you have to go through to get a UK license these days? Far more ballache I'd imagine. Took my motorcycle test in Thailand as I never took the test in UK. Passed everything first time and am proud that I did it the proper way rather than 'paying' for it to be done.

I obtained my car and motorcycle licenses in Udon Thani in 2013.  I had my Passport, home country licenses, the international license and after getting a letter from the local doctor, the only tests I had to undertake was the response and colour tests, no video, no driving test, no Q & A's. They then issued a two year license.  Took about an hour and a half.

Upon renewal,  just provide another doctor's letter and again, the response and  colour tests, then issued with 5 year licenses. This took less than and hour.  Might be different elsewhere or it might have even changed in Udon, given on how some government departments interpret the rules.

When I was getting my 5 year licenses a couple of years ago at Pattaya DLT  there was a guy who was

having a hard time  he said green for everything  the woman examiner  pointing at the colour chart eventually said  "if you say green again you go home"   ok ok he said  she pointed again  he said green   everyone laughed she looked angry someone behind him in the cue whispered the colour in his ear  he said red  the examiner said ok next..

They don't accept English licenses anymore.

Really where and when did that happen to you ??

ok thats 1/3 of an answer    did it happen recently and your own personal experience ?

if  its true ( not just a misunderstanding somewhere ) that they are not excepting English licences any more that's bad news.

has  any one else had the same experience ?

I've had a Thai auto drivers license for 5 years.  Decided to take the bike test.  Passed the written portion first time.  Riding portion I took twice and failed both times.  Kept falling off the concrete platform.  Was only allowed one try each time where I have heard some provinces allow you a second chance.  Also was never offered a pass for a fee.

I finally gave up at least for now.  I don't ride often.  My main concern is not so much not having a license for the police to see.  Wanted it for insurance purposes more than anything.

If and when I decide to take again, I will have to start from scratch taking the written all over again.  It's my understanding I can take it one province over where they give you more than one chance. to pass the riding portion.

Maybe you want to practice driving a bike over a narrow ledge, maybe two or three long boards?

I took that test and passed the first time, I never had a bike license in Germany and never ridden a bike for earnest. So I took driving lessons, as far as those can be had here. First were two afternoons in Cambo, paid the guy known as the organizer and farrang-taxi in the village 10 dollars each to whip up some 15-y-o Honda Wave lacking headlights, indicators, and mud guards, and went practicing a whole afternoon on a field driving circles and waving about, accelerating up and down slopes, then took to the road, waving round puddles. Then enrolled with a driving school in Pattaya, 4000 Baht for 5x2 hours which first took place on a patch of open land halfway to the traffic authority studded with some obstacles like pylons and said boards laid out to train for that part of the test, on the second day we took to the road, little Thai cranking his head to see over my shoulder riding pillion. Worked for me.

I got my bike & car license's last month at Pattaya DLT. Copies of International drivers license, passport, residence cert & medical cert required for each license. Didn't want my UK license. Passed the 2 basic colour & brake tests. 300 baht for car & 200 baht for bike. Took me 30 mins and I was out of there!

My 5 yr Thai motorbike license is up next month.

Will I have to do all the tests again? Watching the video, doing the mutli-choice test etc?

Or should it just be the 3 tests - perception, press the pedal when you see a red light, etc.

Will I have to drive around the course etc?

Testing center will be Chatujak DoLT, Bangkok.

Thanks.

should be just those   they might make you watch a video     if you go just after the licence has expired  then you'll get almost 6 years on the new one

Thought about the board idea.  We have a gravel drive way.  Thought I might place the boards in the middle so the car could straddle them as we come and go.  That way they could stay in place for a while.

I have a scooter.  One thing I have wondered is there a difference in how a scooter and bike handle.  In my younger days what few times I have ridden a bike I don't ever remember it being as difficult as the scooter.  The bike seem more like an extension of your body where the scooter does not.  I've never tried navigating down a narrow platform with a bike, so maybe just as difficult.

Yes, I plan to go the day after my birthday, so should get 5 years and 364 days.

I was just reading the Thai sites and they say that if you go within 3 years of your 5 yr license being expired, you don't do the driving test or rules of the road test, only the 3 tests for your vision etc.

I remember there was a big hoohaa a few years ago when the government 'cracked down' and made everybody do all of the tests every time. Hopefully that's been shelved or forgotten about.

I made my car license in pattaya and had to bring my own car. Do I have to bring my own bike for the motorbike license too or can I borrow one at the DMV?

I don't fancy driving all the way down to Pattaya but from what I heard its far easier to get a license down there than in Bkk.

Btw, I didn't have a license from my home country and got a 5 years license.

I asked that same question of the DMV where I took my test.  They said you had to provide your own bike.  Suggested I probably could borrow a bike from someone at the testing site day of test for a small fee.  I brought my own.  Did not want to risk not being able to borrow a bike plus wanted a bike I was familiar with.

Thats a bummer. Looks like I have to stay a night in pattaya, rent some little scooter and get to DMV, but how they expect people to show up with their own cars and bikes is beyond me..they are here to make a license... TIT.
