CAD/CAM 3d files and conversion of such (STP)

Anyone here familiar with CAD/CAM and STP files?

I need some dimensional design data for a project. The manufacturer of some components I use sent me their data. But alas in the form of .STP files.

I cannot open these .STP files and it is not straight forward to find freeware or online conversion services on www.

Anyone in the know re .STP files and how to view or extract the content?

what file format do you want them in, I have catia here so should be able to convert.

Don Mega,

I know reasonably close to zilch about cad/cam software. Would it be possible to convert to a flat .PDF type presentation?

If not:

Assuming the manufacturer sent renderings of the right boxes:

I know the boxes, I have several at home.

What I am interested in is exact measures.

Outside measures; I assume they are 68 mm by 13.6 mm but would appreciate confirmation of that.

The bottom part of the box has 8 drilled holes. I am not concerned about the 4 holes closest to the edge.

My interest is in the 4 holes not closest to the edge.

What is the distance between centre hole to centre hole of the four holes?

And what is the distance between centre hole and the edge of the box?

In advance, thanks.

Uggh. my Catia has decided its licence is out of date.

will have to do this at work tomorrow, but a pdf with the dims you want is not an issue.

Right, mai pen rai. No problem living in suspension until tomorrow.

If you can, that would be no less than great.

I don't know for sure what the STEP files contain. But probably renderings of something like the image attached to this entry.

If the content is a straight forward drawing with dimensions/measures that can be rendered in a flat PDF piece, good.

If its some artsy content with which you have to use CAD tools for specifying points of interest and get dimensions then I will try to be more specific re what I am interested in.

I can do outside measurements fairly accurate with a calliper, I expect height to be 68 mm and width to be 136 mm,

the depth is of no interest. But would appreciate 68 and 136 to be confirmed.

(I use the terms height, width and depth,

the base plate on which you see some steel stuff is normally mounted on a vertical surface.)

The steel stuff in the middle is of no interest.

My other point of interest is the holes close to the 4 corners of the base plate.

(I know the size of the holes, they are for M5 screws/bolts.)

There are 2 holes close to each of the 4 corners. The 4 holes closest to the corners are for screwing the lid/cover to the

base plate and are of no interest.

Hence, the 4 holes a wee bit away from the corners are the interesting ones.

I am keen to know the centre hole to centre hole distances (the shorter distance in the vertical plane and the longer distance in the horizontal plane).

(Even though I have 4 or 5 such boxes at home I cannot measure this to the required accuracy with a calliper.)

Hope this wasn't too unclear.

In advance thanks for any help.

yeah that wont be an issue.

Iam a bit of an amateur with this 3D as am self learning it gradually. I'll hand it over to my CAD engineer to measure it all up.

Just a suggestion, but have you asked the manufacturer if they can give you the files in a format that you can handle?

Not yet.

I only received the files Thursday last week. Spent a couple of days searching www for online conversion and/or apps that could open the files. Didn't find any.

Thought I would try TV before bothering the manufacturer again.

(I started with a message to their main office in New Zealand. They referred me to a technical support centre

in Europe (Netherlands). The Dutch chap readily sent me (.PDF) with measures for the smaller boxes (half the size

of the box I posted a pic of). A day or two later he came with the STEP files. From the way he expressed himself it

is clear that he didn't have the files himself, he got them from somewhere else.

So its not that straight forward.)

But sure will ask again if it is not sorted here.

Wow Don Mega, thanks an awfull lot.

Just brilliant. Those PDFs contain all I need.

Thanks. Ain't bad this TV. A lot of collective knowledge here.
