Prayut

BANGKOK: -- PRIME Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday slammed Election Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn for saying that the general election might be brought forward by two months to October next year.

Prayut said he had his road map and it was not the Election Commission (EC)'s job to say when the election would be held and nor was it the EC's duty to tell the government what to do

Somchai had recently said in a news show that the election could be held in late September or October next year

Siiigh.  The man is on his own agenda.  But that should not be a surprise.  He thinks he is the government, and at the moment he probably is correct since he did overthrow the last government and did put himself in charge.

If they have an election during the high season with what I would call the 'bullshit' laws regarding alcohol sales then it will piss off a lot of tourists.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they don't care about this and the election won't be for many years yet anyway.

The charter the country supposedly just voted for basically guarantees that no election is required.  But in any case it is just a piece of paper as have been many previous documents and constitutions and they have all been routinely tossed aside by the recurring subsequent coups

" it was not the Election Commission (EC)'s job to say when the election would be held  ". So what is their job then? :rolleyes:

an inactive post

Of course there will be an election next year.

I have put my prediction of who will win and who will be the next pm ( or string puller) in a sealed brown envelope, not to be opened until the day before the election,sorry,the day after. :)

Any guesses?

Prayuth cannot commit because he is not in control or too cowardly to really be in control. That could be due to the people  or another reason, or both. The election date is another one of those topics that we can't fully consider due to that elephant in the room. Thailand gets a bit pathetic at times. Prayuth isn't out to change that tradition.

This reminds me of the Old Johnny Carson show and Karnak the Magnificent skits.  Known answers to questions in the sealed envelopes.

There won't be an election until the inevitable event we cannot discuss has run its course.

After that.....

I agree 100% with that.

"...Prayut said he had his road map and it was not the Election Commission (EC)’s job to say when the election would be held and nor was it the EC’s duty to tell the government what to do..."

Well, yes (partly) if the infamously-called "people's Constitution" (that Thais overwhelmingly endorsed at the referendum) is to be believed.

Despite what Prayut may dictate, Election Commissioner Srisuthiyakorn does have a point (in regards to the roadmap's 6-4-6-4 timetable) - see http://news.thaivisa.com/thailand/pm-says-will-stand-by-6-4-6-4-formula-to-general-elections/120194/.

While it is true that it is not the EC's job to set the date, it is their job (under Section 224 of the Constitution) to "organize or arrange" for the conduct of election of members of the House of Representatives, and govern the election in an honest and fair manner. This is still the case under the Transitory Provisions that will apply at the election.

Also, if the Constitution Drafting Committee were to achieve early completion of their task under Section 267, then the following Organic Bills could be submitted to the NLA, for consideration and approval, ahead of time:

  1. the Organic Act on Election of Members of the House of Representatives;
  2. the Organic Act on Acquisition of Members of the Senate;
  3. the Organic Act on the Election Commission;
  4. the Organic Act on Political Parties;

In such case, the Election Commissioner would then be correct in assuming that the general election might be brought forward, as Section 268 clearly states that the election of members of the House of Representatives (under the Constitution) shall be held within one hundred and fifty days as from the date the organic laws under Section 267 (1), (2), (3) and (4) have come into force.

Adding weight to this argument, it would be fair to suggest that (under the current circumstances) the CDC should not have to spend too much time anguishing over (2), as that activity has already been taken care of by the NCPO under Section 269!

So, the timing of the election now actually rests with Section 267, Meechai, and the other CDC members - all appointed by the NCPO!

He has his road map, every road leads to him.

I am the boss dont you forget it.

I will not give up my freebies/jollies easily.

I'd like to know who he is pointing at and what he is saying and why?  Looks like yet another temper tantrum of who do you think you are to question me???

Honestly, this is a job for the PM's astrologer.

I think that the Organic Act on Political Parties will be commiserated on for an indeterminable amount of time.

Sign in the window: "Elections will be held in 150 days."

What happened in New York, hmm? You come back and you're angry, angry, angry again.

Who cares if there is an election.

The pm will be controlled by senate, and when things go wrong take all the blame to boot.

Who would want to be pm, when any government policy that loses money could be prosecuted for compensation. When the pm can be prosecuted for the corruption of others. When any policy they want must be approved by the self appointed senate. And must follow the orders of senate or risk being kicked out at any moment. Being the Thai pm has got to be one of the riskiest jobs in the country.

Who would want it? ???

i am guessing there is going to be a fair amount of violence associated with the next one horse election. i would also be guessing they will be delayed as long as possible. should be compulsory to hold them mid year to reduce disruption to the tourism industry. i have a business in pattaya. almost every year of the 9 years we have been open there seems to be some even or other that reduces tourist numbers.

The way the PM's job is set up is that only one of the inner circle would dare take the position. It would be like the mating of a black widow spider.

Ah Prayuth has shed his PM cloak of darkness and put on his general's uniform. His military authoritarianism has again risen to the surface.

Looks like toys have been thrown out of his pram again!

Lately even the inner circle brigade can fast become the ousted circle brigade.

Just look at aphiset.

It looks like the source waited for a moment where he is taking questions to catch him pointing. It might seem like biased, generic journalism or it may be cult of personality with a golden splash of Cult of Project Thai, you might want to check the source.

I think you've rigged the vote and you already know the winner....it's a sure thing... know what I mean???  :cheesy:
